## What it does

This skill diagnoses slow Elasticsearch Query DSL searches by running `POST /{index}/_search` with `"profile": true`. Instead of guessing, it inspects the profile tree, checks collector runtimes in nanoseconds, and isolates the heaviest clause. Before rewriting anything, it calls `GET /{index}/_mapping` to verify field types, preventing invalid operations like placing a `term` query on an analyzed `text` field.

The rewrite preserves matching semantics while removing overhead. Non-scoring clauses like `term`, `terms`, or `range` move from `must` to `filter` context, which skips score calculations and enables bitset caching. Queries with leading wildcards such as `message:*timeout*` bypass the inverted index and scan terms; the skill rewrites them to `match`, `match_phrase`, or prefix filters depending on confirmed mappings.

Running this skill requires the `elastic` CLI version 0.2 or higher with `stack es` support. It does not convert queries to ES|QL, and it rejects hardware or shard scaling as a fix whenever the profile points directly to an unoptimized query clause.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-query-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/elasticsearch-query-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/elasticsearch-query-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-query-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/elasticsearch-query-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-query-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/elasticsearch-query-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills elasticsearch-query-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/elasticsearch-query-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-query-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-query-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/elasticsearch-query-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-query-optimization -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- locate bottlenecks in slow Query DSL searches using profiling output
- move non-scoring term and range clauses from must to filter context
- eliminate leading wildcards in search terms by replacing them with match or prefix
- validate field mappings before rewriting search queries

## Example prompts
- Optimize this slow POST /logs-*/_search query: the profile output shows a slow WildcardQuery
- Check mappings and move non-scoring term filters from must to filter context in index orders

# Elasticsearch Query DSL Optimization

Diagnose why a Query DSL search is slow, identify the dominant cost from the profile (not guesswork), rewrite the query
to remove that cost while preserving match semantics, and re-measure with profiling enabled.

<!-- begin-partial: preamble -->

## Environment Configuration

This skill executes Elasticsearch operations through the `elastic` CLI. If the
[`elastic` CLI](https://github.com/elastic/cli#configuration) is not installed, tell the user what it is needed for. Do
not guess credentials, call the HTTP API directly, or attempt other workarounds.

This skill references operations in HTTP-shorthand form (e.g., `GET /`, `GET /_cat/indices`, `GET /{index}/_mapping`,
`GET /{index}/_settings/index.mode`, `POST /_query`). The [Operations](#operations) table at the end of this document
maps each shorthand to the equivalent `elastic` CLI command — always use the CLI rather than calling the HTTP API
directly.

<!-- end-partial: preamble -->

> **Scope:** Query DSL searches via `POST /{index}/_search`. This skill does not migrate queries to ES|QL — it optimizes
> the existing bool/match/term/wildcard structure the user already runs.
>
> **Ground rule:** Never recommend "add shards" or "scale hardware" as the primary fix when the profile names a specific
> clause (for example `WildcardQuery` at ~3.8s). Fix the query first; infrastructure changes require evidence the query
> is already optimal.
