# elasticsearch-ingest

This skill turns local CSV and JSON files into bulk NDJSON, loads them into Elasticsearch, then checks mappings and document counts.

## What it does

The skill walks the agent through a fixed sequence: confirm connectivity, classify the source file, pick an index name, decide whether an explicit mapping is needed, create the index, build NDJSON, and send it with `POST /_bulk`. After the load it compares the document count against the row count from the file and inspects field types. A zero exit code on its own proves nothing here.

Three reference documents back it up: bulk NDJSON format, mapping design, and troubleshooting. Supported inputs are CSV with a header row, a JSON array file, and NDJSON. Parquet and Arrow stay out of scope unless you convert them to CSV or JSON first. Copying documents between existing indices is a different job — that is index-to-index reindex, not this skill.

Everything runs through the `elastic` CLI, version 0.2 or newer with `stack es` support; calling the HTTP API directly is off the table. You need Elasticsearch 8.x or 9.x, self-managed, on Elastic Cloud Hosted, or Serverless. If an index already exists with the wrong field types, the skill asks before deleting and recreating it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-ingest -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/elasticsearch-ingest/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/elasticsearch-ingest/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-ingest -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/elasticsearch-ingest/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-ingest -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/elasticsearch-ingest/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills elasticsearch-ingest
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/elasticsearch-ingest/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-ingest -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-ingest
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/elasticsearch-ingest/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-ingest -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-ingest/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- load a CSV so columns land as typed fields, not strings
- split a JSON array into per-document lines for bulk
- compare the indexed document count with the row count in the file
- confirm dates and numbers kept their intended types
- rebuild an index with a correct mapping after a bad load

## Example prompts
- Load `orders.csv` into the `orders` index — `total` should be numeric and `created_at` a date
- Convert `events.json` to NDJSON, bulk index it, then show me `GET /events/_count`
- Check the mapping on `orders` and tell me which fields came in as `text` instead of `long`

# Elasticsearch File Ingest

Load local data files into Elasticsearch by converting them to bulk NDJSON, creating an index with the right mappings
when types matter, bulk-indexing documents, and verifying the outcome.

<!-- begin-partial: preamble -->

## Environment Configuration

This skill executes Elasticsearch operations through the `elastic` CLI. If the
[`elastic` CLI](https://github.com/elastic/cli#configuration) is not installed, tell the user what it is needed for. Do
not guess credentials, call the HTTP API directly, or attempt other workarounds.

This skill references operations in HTTP-shorthand form (e.g., `GET /`, `GET /_cat/indices`, `GET /{index}/_mapping`,
`GET /{index}/_settings/index.mode`, `POST /_query`). The [Operations](#operations) table at the end of this document
maps each shorthand to the equivalent `elastic` CLI command — always use the CLI rather than calling the HTTP API
directly.

<!-- end-partial: preamble -->

## Scope

This skill covers **file → index** loading through `POST /_bulk`. It does not use Logstash, Filebeat, Elastic Agent,
Node.js ingest tools, or other sidecar pipelines. For copying documents between existing indices, use index-to-index
reindex instead of re-parsing source files.

Supported source shapes:

| Source shape        | Example                          | Bulk requirement                                                                   |
| ------------------- | -------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| CSV with header row | `id,name,age,...` then data rows | Parse header into field names; emit one action line + one JSON object per data row |
```
The third-party file has ended. Everything between the e6dae552a628f7d1 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
