# elasticsearch-index-design

Guides the agent through designing and reviewing Elasticsearch index mappings: field types, multi-fields, shard settings. Useful when creating an index or auditing an existing mapping.

## What it does

The skill walks the agent through a fixed order. First it collects how each field is used — search, filter, aggregation, sort, or retrieve-only. Missing access-pattern data is treated as a blocker, so the agent asks instead of guessing. Then it picks the smallest type set that fits: `text` for full-text, `keyword` for filter and aggregation, `text` with a `fields.keyword` sub-field when a field must be both searched and sorted.

Review checks target mapping explosion and disk bloat. Fields used only for filtering should not be `text`. A `keyword` sub-field on a large body without `ignore_above` gets flagged. Free-form objects with many distinct keys belong in `flattened`, and `doc_values: false` saves space on fields that only come back in hits. For bounded-precision metrics it suggests `scaled_float` with a chosen `scaling_factor`.

Operations run through the `elastic` CLI, version 0.2 or later with `stack es` support. If the CLI is missing, the skill says what it is for rather than calling the HTTP API directly. Elasticsearch 8.x or 9.x is required, self-managed, Elastic Cloud Hosted or Serverless. Explicit `number_of_shards` and `number_of_replicas` only apply to self-managed and Hosted deployments — on Serverless Elastic manages them, so the skill omits them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-index-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/elasticsearch-index-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/elasticsearch-index-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-index-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/elasticsearch-index-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-index-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/elasticsearch-index-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills elasticsearch-index-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/elasticsearch-index-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-index-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-index-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/elasticsearch-index-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-index-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-index-design/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick the right field type for a stated access pattern
- spot fields in an existing mapping that waste disk
- map a field as `text` with a `keyword` sub-field for search plus sort
- keep free-form objects from blowing up the mapping
- change a field type through a new index and reindex

## Example prompts
- Design a mapping for a products index: full-text search on name, sort and aggregate on it too, price as a number, created as a date
- Review the current mapping of the orders index and tell me which fields should be keyword
- The message field has a keyword sub-field with no ignore_above — is that a problem, and what should I do

# Elasticsearch Index Design

Design explicit index mappings from access patterns, review existing mappings for type and storage mistakes, and apply
corrections through a new index plus reindex when field types must change.

<!-- begin-partial: preamble -->

## Environment Configuration

This skill executes Elasticsearch operations through the `elastic` CLI. If the
[`elastic` CLI](https://github.com/elastic/cli#configuration) is not installed, tell the user what it is needed for. Do
not guess credentials, call the HTTP API directly, or attempt other workarounds.

This skill references operations in HTTP-shorthand form (e.g., `GET /`, `GET /_cat/indices`, `GET /{index}/_mapping`,
`GET /{index}/_settings/index.mode`, `POST /_query`). The [Operations](#operations) table at the end of this document
maps each shorthand to the equivalent `elastic` CLI command — always use the CLI rather than calling the HTTP API
directly.

<!-- end-partial: preamble -->

## Process

1. **Gather access patterns per field.** Before choosing types, list how each field is used. For every field capture:
   - **Search** — full-text match, phrase, relevance scoring?
   - **Filter** — exact term, terms set, prefix?
