# elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer

Explains Elasticsearch ML anomaly scores: why a record scored high or low, what the gap between initial and current scores means, and where to look next.

## What it does

The skill answers the question that shows up right after an alert fires: why the model scored this event the way it did. It pulls the job's `analysis_config` through the ML REST API, then reads records from `.ml-anomalies-*` with a plain `_search` call. Both `initial_record_score` and `record_score` get shown, and the gap between them is explained instead of left hanging.

That gap usually means renormalization: a later, larger anomaly pulled the older score down. Nothing is broken, and the skill says to take the initial value when setting alert severity. It also separates a real drop from a spike. Under `low_count` or `low_mean`, a high score means traffic vanished, so the reasoning moves toward an incident rather than toward threshold tuning.

Access runs through the `elastic` CLI against Elasticsearch 8.x+ or Elastic Cloud Serverless, and self-managed clusters need a Platinum-equivalent license. Reading job config and results takes the `monitor_ml` privilege. On Serverless the `_ml/.../results/*` endpoints answer with HTTP 410, so record queries go to `POST /.ml-anomalies-*/_search` only.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-anomaly-detection-explainer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- explain why a drop in traffic scored as a high anomaly
- tell renormalization apart from a model that is failing
- decode an anomaly record pasted into the chat without re-querying the cluster
- list anomaly detector jobs and read one job's `analysis_config`
- measure how far scores drifted across a time range

## Example prompts
- Why is `record_score` 90 here when `initial_record_score` was much higher?
- Explain this anomaly record: `actual` sits below `typical`, the function is `low_count`. Real outage or noise?
- Pull the recent records for this job from `.ml-anomalies-*` and show where the score dropped the most

# Anomaly Detection Score Explainer

Explain anomaly scores, model behavior, and why results look the way they do. Use the **ML REST API** for job config and
the **standard `_search` API** against `.ml-anomalies-*` for results — no ES|QL, fully compatible with Elastic
Serverless. For job lifecycle (create, start, stop), use the `elasticsearch-anomaly-detection` skill.

<!-- begin-partial: preamble -->

## Environment Configuration

This skill executes Elasticsearch operations through the `elastic` CLI. If the
[`elastic` CLI](https://github.com/elastic/cli#configuration) is not installed, tell the user what it is needed for. Do
not guess credentials, call the HTTP API directly, or attempt other workarounds.

This skill references operations in HTTP-shorthand form (e.g., `GET /`, `GET /_cat/indices`, `GET /{index}/_mapping`,
`GET /{index}/_settings/index.mode`, `POST /_query`). The [Operations](#operations) table at the end of this document
maps each shorthand to the equivalent `elastic` CLI command — always use the CLI rather than calling the HTTP API
directly.

<!-- end-partial: preamble -->

> **Prerequisite:** ML anomaly detection requires a Platinum-equivalent license on self-managed clusters. Serverless
> projects include ML. The caller needs `monitor_ml` to read job config and anomaly results.
