# effect-best-practices

A skill that makes the agent follow Effect-TS conventions for services, errors, layers and atoms. Useful when the codebase already runs on Effect.

## What it does

The skill spells out how Effect-TS code should look so types stay consistent. Services go through `Effect.Service` with `accessors: true`, and dependencies are declared inside the service instead of being wired with `Layer.provide` at each call site. Errors use `Schema.TaggedError` with a `message` field, one type per failure reason: `UserNotFoundError` rather than a generic `NotFoundError`. Handling goes through `catchTag` and `catchTags`, since `catchAll` drops type information.

A do/don't table covers services, layers, errors, IDs, logging, config and atoms. There is a separate section on effect-atom: create atoms outside components, keep global state with `Atom.keepAlive`, update through `useAtomSet`, and read results with `Result.builder` plus `onErrorTag`. For layer composition the skill points to `Layer.mergeAll` and `Layer.provideMerge` instead of nested chains.

The Effect Language Server is required. Plain TypeScript will not catch some Effect errors on its own. Install it with `npm install @effect/language-service --save-dev`, add the plugin to `tsconfig.json`, and switch your editor to the workspace TypeScript version. CI can enforce it with `npx effect-language-service patch`. On a project that does not use Effect, the skill only gets in the way: it pushes one specific style.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Makisuo/skills --skill effect-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/effect-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/effect-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Makisuo/skills --skill effect-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/effect-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Makisuo/skills --skill effect-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/effect-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Makisuo/skills effect-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/effect-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Makisuo/skills --skill effect-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Makisuo/skills --path effect-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/effect-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Makisuo/skills --skill effect-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Makisuo/skills/tree/HEAD/effect-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- declare a service with Effect.Service and generated accessors
- split failures into separate error types instead of one generic
- compose layers without nested Layer.provide chains
- render atom state with loading and error branches
- catch Effect errors while editing, not at build time

## Example prompts
- Write a UserService with Effect.Service that depends on UserRepo and CacheService
- Rework the error handling with catchTags and a distinct type per failure
- Build MainLive with Layer.mergeAll from the app services

# Effect-TS Best Practices

This skill enforces opinionated, consistent patterns for Effect-TS codebases. These patterns optimize for type safety, testability, observability, and maintainability.

## Effect Language Server (Required)

**The Effect Language Server is essential for Effect development.** It catches errors at edit-time that TypeScript alone cannot detect, provides Effect-specific refactors, and improves developer productivity.

### Setup

1. Install:
```bash
npm install @effect/language-service --save-dev
```

2. Add to `tsconfig.json`:
```json
{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "plugins": [{ "name": "@effect/language-service" }]
  }
}
```

3. Configure your editor to use workspace TypeScript:
   - **VSCode**: F1 → "TypeScript: Select TypeScript Version" → "Use Workspace Version"
   - **JetBrains**: Settings → Languages & Frameworks → TypeScript → Use workspace version

### Features

- **Diagnostics**: Detects 30+ Effect-specific issues (floating Effects, missing requirements, incorrect yield patterns)
- **Quick Info**: Hover to see Effect type parameters (Success, Error, Requirements)
- **Completions**: Auto-complete `Self`, Duration strings, Schema brands
- **Refactors**: Convert async → Effect.gen, auto-compose Layers, transform to Schema

### Build-Time Diagnostics

For CI enforcement:
```bash
npx effect-language-service patch
```

See `references/language-server.md` for configuration options and CLI tools.

## Quick Reference: Critical Rules

| Category | DO | DON'T |
|----------|-----|-------|
| Services | `Effect.Service` with `accessors: true` | `Context.Tag` for business logic |
| Dependencies | `dependencies: [Dep.Default]` in service | Manual `Layer.provide` at usage sites |
| Layers | `Layer.mergeAll` for flat composition | Deeply nested `Layer.provide` chains |
| Layer Chaining | `Layer.provideMerge` for incremental composition | Multiple `Layer.provide` (creates nested types) |
| Errors | `Schema.TaggedError` with `message` field | Plain classes or generic Error |
