# go-naming

Applies Go naming conventions from Effective Go to packages, methods, acronyms, and errors. Helps prevent stuttering names like order.OrderService.

## What it does

The skill enforces naming guidelines from Effective Go across your codebase. It inspects packages, files, interfaces, receivers, and constants. Package names stay singular and lowercase, avoiding generic catch-alls like `common` or `util`. It also eliminates stuttering at call sites, keeping `http.Client` instead of `http.HTTPClient`.

Rules maintain consistent casing for acronyms (`userID`, `ServeHTTP`). Getters drop the `Get` prefix. Receivers take one or two letters instead of `this` or `self`. Sentinel errors require `Err`, while custom error types end in `Error`.

Verification requires a local Go toolchain with access to `gofmt`. The skill does not reformat code or rename symbols across the project. Separate skills handle those tasks.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-naming -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-naming/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-naming -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-naming -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills go-naming
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-naming -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --path 'skills/(code-quality)/go-naming'
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-naming -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/(code-quality)/go-naming/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- eliminate stuttering package names like user.NewUser
- standardize initialism casing across types such as userID and ServeHTTP
- clean up getters by dropping the Get prefix
- name sentinel errors and custom error types consistently

## Example prompts
- Review the naming in internal/orders against Go conventions
- What should I name the client type in package httpsign without stuttering?
- Audit receiver names and enum constants in cache.go

# Go Naming

In Go the package name is part of every call site, capitalization decides
visibility, and short names are the norm. A good name reads well *where it
is used*, not where it is declared.

> Community default. A project skill or agent-config rule that explicitly
> supersedes `go-naming` takes precedence over this one.

Detailed reference material, loaded on demand:

- `references/examples.md` — before/after renames for every rule below,
  including the initialism and stuttering edge cases.

Read a reference file only when the summary below is not enough.

## 1. Quick Reference

| Element | Convention | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Package | short, lowercase, one word, singular | `order`, `httpsign`, `postgres` |
| File | lowercase, `_` allowed, named after its main type or concern | `order_service.go`, `order_service_test.go` |
| Exported identifier | `MixedCaps` | `ParseToken`, `MaxRetries` |
| Unexported identifier | `mixedCaps` | `parseToken`, `maxRetries` |
| Initialism | all one case | `URL`, `userID`, `ServeHTTP`, `xmlParser` |
| Getter / setter | `Owner()` / `SetOwner()` | never `GetOwner()` |
| Constructor | `New` for the package's main type, `NewThing` otherwise | `ring.New`, `http.NewRequest` |
| Panicking variant | `Must` prefix | `template.Must`, `regexp.MustCompile` |
| Functional option | `With` + setting | `WithTimeout`, `WithLogger` |
| One-method interface | method + `-er` | `Reader`, `Notifier` |
| Receiver | 1-2 letters, same on every method | `func (s *Server)` |
| Sentinel error | `Err` prefix (`err` unexported) | `ErrNotFound`, `errClosed` |
| Error type | `Error` suffix | `ValidationError` |
| Enum constant | type name prefix, zero = unknown | `StatusUnknown`, `StatusActive` |
| Test | `Test` + function, `Test` + type `_` method | `TestParse`, `TestCache_Get` |

## 2. Packages

- Short, lowercase, single word: no underscores, no `mixedCaps`, no plural
  (`order`, not `orders`).
- Name it after what it *provides*: `retry`, `httpsign`, `postgres`. Never
  `util`, `common`, `helpers`, `misc`, `base`, `models`, `types` — they
  say nothing and collect everything.
- The directory name and the package name match.
