## What it does

The skill directs PCB layout tasks through KiCad MCP integrations. It establishes the board outline and positions critical parts such as boundary connectors and decoupling capacitors near power pins.

A pre-layout phase inspects `docs/design-constraints.json` together with schematic files before routing starts. High-speed traces like USB differential signals receive 90-ohm impedance routing, followed by copper plane pours. Without configured `mcp__kicad-pcb` tools in your environment, the agent cannot manipulate board elements.

Workflow ends with design rule checks (DRC) configured for target fabricators like JLCPCB, down to 0.127 mm trace widths. Board progress is recorded in `docs/pcb-status.md`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add l3wi/claude-eda --skill eda-pcb -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/eda-pcb/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/eda-pcb/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add l3wi/claude-eda --skill eda-pcb -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/eda-pcb/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add l3wi/claude-eda --skill eda-pcb -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/eda-pcb/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install l3wi/claude-eda eda-pcb
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/eda-pcb/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add l3wi/claude-eda --skill eda-pcb -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/l3wi/claude-eda --path templates/claude/skills/eda-pcb
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/eda-pcb/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add l3wi/claude-eda --skill eda-pcb -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- arrange board components following functional hierarchy and thermal needs
- route differential USB pairs alongside critical power delivery tracks
- generate ground copper fills with stitching vias on multiple layers
- execute design rule verification to catch clearances before manufacturing

## Example prompts
- Place board connectors along edges and group bypass caps next to IC power pins
- Configure layout limits for JLCPCB manufacturing rules and run a DRC scan
- Fill bottom layer ground plane with thermal reliefs and stitching vias
