## What it does

The skill covers the whole data layer of a Phoenix app: schemas and changesets with validation, migrations, queries with preload, Ecto.Multi, database constraints, pagination, tenant partitioning and tests. It ships as reference material with code samples the agent pulls in when you ask for anything Ecto-related.

The conventions are opinionated in a useful way. Casting and validation stay in changesets, business logic stays in contexts, and every validation gets a matching database constraint (`unique_constraint`, `foreign_key_constraint`). Multi-step writes go through `Repo.transaction` or `Ecto.Multi`; large tables get indexes with `concurrently: true` and migrations split into small steps.

There is a pitfalls section too: risky DDL crammed into one migration, querying associations in a loop instead of preloading, missing transactions around multi-step writes. If you run prefix-based multi-tenancy on Postgres, note that each tenant needs its own migrations — worth checking how your deploy handles that.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill ecto-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ecto-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ecto-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill ecto-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ecto-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill ecto-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ecto-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills ecto-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ecto-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill ecto-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/elixir/data/ecto-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ecto-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill ecto-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- write a schema and changeset with field validation
- run a migration without locking a large table
- build a multi-step write with Ecto.Multi
- kill an N+1 when rendering a list
- split tenant data across Postgres prefixes

## Example prompts
- add a User schema and a registration changeset with email validation
- rewrite this multi-step insert using Ecto.Multi
- why is there an N+1 here and how do I fix it with preload

# Ecto Patterns for Phoenix/Elixir

Ecto is the data layer for Phoenix applications: schemas, changesets, queries, migrations, and transactions. Good Ecto practice keeps domain logic in contexts, enforces constraints in the database, and uses transactions for multi-step workflows.

## Schemas and Changesets

```elixir
defmodule MyApp.Accounts.User do
  use Ecto.Schema
  import Ecto.Changeset
  schema "users" do
    field :email, :string
    field :hashed_password, :string
    field :confirmed_at, :naive_datetime
    has_many :memberships, MyApp.Orgs.Membership
    timestamps()
  end
  def registration_changeset(user, attrs) do
    user
    |> cast(attrs, [:email, :password])
    |> validate_required([:email, :password])
    |> validate_format(:email, ~r/@/)
    |> validate_length(:password, min: 12)
    |> unique_constraint(:email)
    |> hash_password()
  end
  defp hash_password(%{valid?: true} = cs),
    do: put_change(cs, :hashed_password, Argon2.hash_pwd_salt(get_change(cs, :password)))
  defp hash_password(cs), do: cs
end
```

**Guidelines**
- Keep casting/validation in changesets; keep business logic in contexts.
- Always pair validation with DB constraints (`unique_constraint`, `foreign_key_constraint`).
- Use `changeset/2` for updates; avoid mass assigning without casting.

## Migrations

```elixir
def change do
  create table(:users) do
    add :email, :citext, null: false
    add :hashed_password, :string, null: false
