# ebitengine-game

An agent skill for building, debugging and packaging playable 2D games in Go with Ebitengine. Useful when you want a finished loop, not a nice screenshot.

## What it does

The skill walks an agent through the whole delivery: read the repo instructions and `go.mod`, find the `RunGame` entrypoint, then build a playable slice around the central interaction before expanding content. It ships a starter built on a small platformer that shows scenes, action input, text, sound, a camera, pause and scripted capture. That starter is an integration example, not a genre requirement — a puzzle or card game should not inherit gravity, jumping or a platformer HUD.

The bundled starter targets Ebitengine v2.10.5 and Go 1.25+. Existing projects keep their versions unless an upgrade is actually needed. Commands resolve against the skill's own directory, not the game's working directory: `python3 "$skill_dir/scripts/new_game.py" --out mygame --module example.com/mygame --title "My Game"`. The `--ci` flag adds a workflow and tools, so check its triggers and release behavior before enabling it.

The skill also spells out the loop contracts. `Update()` samples actions and advances simulation, `Draw()` renders the state updates produced, and `Layout()` picks logical dimensions. Gameplay must not move inside `Draw()`, because draw calls are not one-to-one with ticks. It also insists on testing with real input: a scripted demo cannot tell you how the controls feel.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill ebitengine-game -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ebitengine-game/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ebitengine-game/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill ebitengine-game -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ebitengine-game/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill ebitengine-game -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ebitengine-game/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills ebitengine-game
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ebitengine-game/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill ebitengine-game -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --path skills/ebitengine/ebitengine-game
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ebitengine-game/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills --skill ebitengine-game -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/gamedev-skills/awesome-gamedev-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ebitengine/ebitengine-game/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stand up a working Ebitengine game loop from scratch
- turn a game design into input, rendering and scene code
- fix input, scenes or audio in an existing Go game
- write tests for game rules and scene transitions
- build desktop, browser or mobile targets

## Example prompts
- Build a 2D platformer with Ebitengine: player, jumping, three levels
- Pause is broken in my Ebitengine game — find the cause and fix it
- Add sound and scene transitions, then build a browser target

  translated into a complete loop, input, rendering, text, audio, scenes, gameplay

  in an existing Ebitengine game. Do not apply to unrelated Go software or
  engine-internal patches merely because they depend on Ebitengine.

# Ebitengine game

Deliver a game that is understandable, responsive and complete at the requested
scope. One request can include several internal build/play/refine passes. A
scaffold, successful build or attractive screenshot alone is not a finished game.
For a focused fix, preserve the project's design and limit the workflow to the
affected behavior.

The bundled starter targets **Ebitengine v2.10.5 / Go 1.25+**. This is a pinned
baseline, not a claim about the latest release. Keep an existing project's
versions unless an upgrade is needed and authorized. Check the pinned version's
public API before using newer or experimental APIs. References contain patterns
to adapt; only the bundled scripts and starter are executable deliverables.
Their checks do not validate every reference snippet.

## Delivery workflow

1. **Inspect and decide.** Read repository instructions, `go.mod`, the `RunGame`
   entrypoint and existing tests/assets. For new games, read
   [Design and quality](references/design-and-quality.md). Establish the player's
   goal, repeated decision, consequence, end/retry path, intended look, platform
   and supported input. Infer reasonable defaults; ask only for missing choices
   that materially change the product. Record a short brief and observable
   acceptance criteria in the project.
2. **Build a representative playable slice.** Make the central interaction and
   its feedback work with the intended controls and visual direction. Check the
   feel before expanding content. Keep scope small enough to finish; choose
   authored or procedural content based on the game, not the template. Calibrate
