## What it does

This skill scaffolds diagnostic model wrappers that connect external ML transforms to Earth2Studio. It targets single-step transformations where input fields yield output fields at a fixed point in time. It does not handle multi-step forecasting models.

The workflow handles three model variants: simple `torch.nn.Module` transforms, packaged `AutoModelMixin` diagnostics, and generative diffusion models. The skill places new models in `earth2studio/models/dx/`, prepares mock tests in `test/models/dx/`, and configures dependency extras in `pyproject.toml`.

A working setup requires Python 3.10+ and Earth2Studio installed with dev dependencies via `uv sync --all-extras`. All testing and verification steps enforce `uv run` to keep dependencies clean. Validating generative models will require a GPU and fixed seeds to avoid false comparison failures.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill earth2studio-create-diagnostic -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/earth2studio-create-diagnostic/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/earth2studio-create-diagnostic/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill earth2studio-create-diagnostic -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/earth2studio-create-diagnostic/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill earth2studio-create-diagnostic -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/earth2studio-create-diagnostic/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills earth2studio-create-diagnostic
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/earth2studio-create-diagnostic/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill earth2studio-create-diagnostic -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/earth2studio-create-diagnostic
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/earth2studio-create-diagnostic/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill earth2studio-create-diagnostic -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- wrap a single-step ML diagnostic model for Earth2Studio
- generate boilerplate and mock tests for an AutoModel checkpoint
- integrate a derived field calculation using torch.nn.Module
- configure model dependency extras in pyproject.toml

## Example prompts
- Create an Earth2Studio diagnostic wrapper using inference.py
- Build a simple derived diagnostic module for wind speed
- Implement a generative AutoModel diagnostic wrapper for CorrDiff

## Quick Start Checklist

Do these steps in order. Do not skip ahead. Before editing, read this
SKILL.md and load the relevant reference files for the model type. After
implementation, run the focused pytest command before saying tests pass. If
tests cannot run, report the exact command and failure instead of claiming
success.

- [ ] Read this SKILL.md completely first
- [ ] Get the reference script, repo, paper, or model documentation (Step 0)
- [ ] Classify the diagnostic as simple, AutoModel, or generative (Step 1)
- [ ] Propose dependency extras before editing dependency files (Step 1)
- [ ] Create `earth2studio/models/dx/<name>.py` with diagnostic-only APIs
- [ ] Create `test/models/dx/test_<name>.py` with mock tests
- [ ] Run: `uv run pytest test/models/dx/test_<name>.py -m "not package" -v`
- [ ] Add/update model extra, install docs, API docs, and changelog when required
- [ ] Run: `make format && make lint && make license`

Critical command rule: always use `uv run` for Python commands:

- Use `uv run pytest ...` and `uv run python ...`
- Do not use bare `pytest` or `python` in repo workflows

If the generated model is wrong, do not keep retrying the same fix. Follow
[Self-Improvement](#self-improvement), patch this skill or its references, then
continue with the corrected workflow.

## Purpose

Implement a diagnostic model wrapper connecting third-party or derived ML
transforms to Earth2Studio. Diagnostic models transform data at a single time
point: input fields in, output fields out, no forecast integration.

## Prerequisites

- Earth2Studio installed via `uv` with dev dependencies (`uv sync --all-extras`)
- Python 3.10+ environment
- Reference inference script, repo, paper, or model documentation
- Checkpoint source and license information for packaged models

## Limitations

- Handles single-step transformations only
- Does not support time-stepping forecast models; use `earth2studio-create-prognostic`
- Real package tests can require network access to NGC, HuggingFace, S3, or other registries
- Generative validation can require GPU and fixed seeds for meaningful comparison
