# dt-obs-tracing

A Dynatrace skill for span-level trace work: slow requests, failed spans, service dependencies. Useful when you need to dig into one request.

## What it does

The skill teaches an agent to query spans in Grail with DQL. A span is a unit of work — an HTTP request, a gRPC call, a database operation, a message on a queue, an internal function. Each one carries a `span.kind` of `server`, `client`, `consumer`, `producer` or `internal`, and request entry points are marked with `request.is_root_span == true`. That flag is what you filter on for end-to-end request timing.

It ships with query patterns: a per-service summary with error rate, p95 and p99 percentiles by endpoint, trace ID lookup, and threshold-based slow trace detection. The author recommends percentiles over averages. There is also a section on sampling. One span can stand for several real operations because of aggregation and adaptive sampling, so counting operations without the multiplicity factor gives you numbers that do not match reality.

Scope is narrow on purpose. Service-level RED metrics belong to `dt-obs-services`, log searching to `dt-obs-logs`, problem analysis to `dt-obs-problems`. Documentation and configuration questions are out too. Ask the agent about a service's overall health rather than a specific span and it will likely reach for the wrong skill.

## Requirements
- Works with: Dynatrace

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-tracing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dt-obs-tracing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dt-obs-tracing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-tracing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dt-obs-tracing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-tracing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dt-obs-tracing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai dt-obs-tracing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dt-obs-tracing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-tracing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --path skills/dt-obs-tracing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dt-obs-tracing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-tracing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai/tree/HEAD/skills/dt-obs-tracing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find requests over a latency threshold and pull their trace IDs
- break failures down by HTTP code, exception or gRPC status
- map service-to-service calls with counts and error rates
- list every span in a single trace by its ID
- compute p95 and p99 per endpoint instead of averages

## Example prompts
- Find traces slower than 5 seconds in the last 2 hours and show endpoint and service
- Show all spans in trace `abc123def456` with duration and service name
- What services does `checkout` call, and how many errors are there?

# Application Tracing Skill

## Overview

Distributed traces in Dynatrace consist of spans - building blocks representing units of work. With Traces in Grail, every span is accessible via DQL with full-text searchability on all attributes. This skill covers trace fundamentals, common analysis patterns, and span-type specific queries.

---

## Use Cases

### 1. Investigate Slow Requests
- **Goal:** Find and diagnose requests exceeding a latency threshold
- **Trigger:** "slow requests", "high latency", "p99 response time", "find traces over 5 seconds"
- **Done:** List of slow traces with duration, endpoint, service, and trace IDs for drilldown

### 2. Analyze Request Failures
- **Goal:** Identify failed requests, failure reasons, and exception patterns
- **Trigger:** "failed spans", "HTTP 500 errors", "exception analysis", "failure rate by service"
- **Done:** Failure breakdown by reason (HTTP code, exception, gRPC status) with exemplar traces

### 3. Map Service Dependencies
- **Goal:** Understand service-to-service communication patterns and external API calls
- **Trigger:** "service dependencies", "what services does X call", "outgoing HTTP calls"
- **Done:** Dependency map showing call counts, latency, and error rates between services

---

## Core Concepts

### Understanding Traces and Spans

**Spans** represent logical units of work in distributed traces:
- HTTP requests, RPC calls, database operations
- Messaging system interactions
- Internal function invocations
- Custom instrumentation points

**Span kinds**:
- `span.kind: server` - Incoming call to a service
