## What it does

The skill hands your agent a set of Dynatrace analyzers for time series work: `timeseries-forecast`, `adaptive-anomaly-detector`, `seasonal-baseline-anomaly-detector`, `static-threshold-analyzer` and `timeseries-novelty-detection`. Ask which hosts will reach 90% CPU over the next 30 days, forecast request volume for a week, or pin down when a metric started climbing.

The first decision is whether you want change or current state. Questions like "when did this start" go to `timeseries-novelty-detection` — no threshold needed. Questions like "who is above normal right now" go to an anomaly detector, which counts violations inside a sliding window. Point `adaptive-anomaly-detector` at a whole fleet and it will flag every service with any variation at all. Run novelty detection first, then measure severity on the entities that actually moved.

Forecasting here is univariate: one metric against its own history. Multivariate models that take several metrics as input have to be built elsewhere, in Python or R. The skill asks for results as a table with rank, last actual value, forecast and confidence band, followed by a short list of key findings.

## Requirements
- Works with: Dynatrace

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-predictive-analytics -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dt-obs-predictive-analytics/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dt-obs-predictive-analytics/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-predictive-analytics -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dt-obs-predictive-analytics/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-predictive-analytics -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dt-obs-predictive-analytics/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai dt-obs-predictive-analytics
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dt-obs-predictive-analytics/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-predictive-analytics -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --path skills/dt-obs-predictive-analytics
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dt-obs-predictive-analytics/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-predictive-analytics -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai/tree/HEAD/skills/dt-obs-predictive-analytics/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- forecast which hosts hit 90% CPU within a month
- find when a metric changed character without a fixed threshold
- separate a seasonal traffic spike from a real anomaly
- check whether memory use is growing across Kubernetes nodes
- count services currently running above their usual load

## Example prompts
- Forecast which Dynatrace hosts will reach 90% CPU in the next 30 days
- Use timeseries-novelty-detection to find when service request volume started rising
- Compare today's traffic to last week and show what breaks the weekly pattern

# Predictive Analytics Skill

Forecast resource saturation, detect trends, analyze anomalies, and characterize signal behavior using DQL and Dynatrace analyzer tools.

## Analysis Disciplines

| # | Discipline | Use when … |
|---|------------|-----------|
| 1 | **Forecast and Prediction** | Predicting future metric values for capacity planning, cost estimation, or proactive alerting |
| 2 | **Detecting Changes** | A metric *shifted* — find when the character of the signal changed, regardless of whether it crossed a limit |
| 3 | **Detecting Violations** | A metric is *currently out of bounds* — find entities that exceed or fall below an acceptable range |
| 4 | **Timeseries Characteristics** | Characterizing a signal's seasonality, noise level, and trend before further analysis |

---

## Choosing the Right Detection Tool

**The single most important decision**: are you asking "did this metric *change*?" or "is this metric *currently wrong*?"

| Question | Tool | Why |
|----------|------|-----|
| "Did this metric change in the last N hours?" | `timeseries-novelty-detection` | Detects *when* the signal's character changed (spike, step, trend onset, variability shift) without requiring a known acceptable limit |
| "Which services spiked or dropped recently?" | `timeseries-novelty-detection` with `SPIKE` / `CHANGE_IN_VALUES` | Finds the specific entities and timestamps where change occurred; returns empty for stable signals |
| "When did CPU start trending up?" | `timeseries-novelty-detection` with `TREND_IN_VALUES` | Pinpoints the onset of a directional shift |
| "Which hosts are currently above 90% CPU?" | `static-threshold-analyzer` | Known fixed limit — fire alerts when exceeded | Can also be done with standard DQL queries, but the tool provides built-in violation counting, sliding window and alerting logic |
