## What it does

This skill provides the agent with Dynatrace Query Language (DQL) patterns to inspect Kubernetes infrastructure. It structures queries across `smartscapeNodes` for entity inventory, `timeseries` for resource metrics, and `fetch logs` for cluster events. Workload kinds such as `deployment` and `daemonset` must remain lowercase, matching Dynatrace entity standards rather than standard Kubernetes PascalCase.

Resource limit and request aggregations require strict attention: always calculate `limits_cpu` and `limits_memory` using `sum()` instead of `avg()`. Using `avg()` will silently distort capacity planning because it flattens multi-container pods and underreports DaemonSet workloads across nodes. Note that while `k8s.object` JSON is accessible for pods, nodes, and workloads, it is unavailable on `K8S_CLUSTER` entities.

The scope covers cluster health, OOMKills, evictions, and scheduling constraints. Do not invoke it for distributed tracing, service-level RED metrics, or AWS-specific queries, as Dynatrace delegates those domains to separate skills.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes, Dynatrace

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-kubernetes -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dt-obs-kubernetes/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dt-obs-kubernetes/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-kubernetes -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dt-obs-kubernetes/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-kubernetes -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dt-obs-kubernetes/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai dt-obs-kubernetes
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dt-obs-kubernetes/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-kubernetes -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --path skills/dt-obs-kubernetes
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dt-obs-kubernetes/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai --skill dt-obs-kubernetes -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Dynatrace/dynatrace-for-ai/tree/HEAD/skills/dt-obs-kubernetes/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- investigate pod crash loops and OOMKill events
- track CPU and memory usage across cluster nodes
- detect over-provisioned container limits and requests
- audit pod placement rules, taints, and affinities

## Example prompts
- Check cluster health and list pods experiencing OOMKills in the last hour
- Show container CPU utilization in the production namespace using Dynatrace DQL
- Identify Kubernetes nodes where pod capacity exceeds 80%
