## What it does

This skill provides workflow patterns to combine individual DSPy modules into compound programs. It covers four integration techniques: majority voting with the `Ensemble` optimizer, consensus selection through `MultiChainComparison`, multi-stage pipelines such as query rewriting followed by retrieval, and fallback routing wrapped in exception handlers. File operations are handled through `Read`, `Write`, `Glob`, and `Grep` tools.

The templates target DSPy version `3.2.1`. When you use `MultiChainComparison`, you must pass a Signature class rather than a string definition. Running multiple reasoning chains before selecting the best answer increases model call counts, which drives up token costs.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OmidZamani/dspy-skills --skill dspy-advanced-module-composition -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dspy-advanced-module-composition/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dspy-advanced-module-composition/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OmidZamani/dspy-skills --skill dspy-advanced-module-composition -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dspy-advanced-module-composition/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OmidZamani/dspy-skills --skill dspy-advanced-module-composition -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dspy-advanced-module-composition/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install OmidZamani/dspy-skills dspy-advanced-module-composition
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dspy-advanced-module-composition/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OmidZamani/dspy-skills --skill dspy-advanced-module-composition -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/OmidZamani/dspy-skills --path skills/dspy-advanced-module-composition
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dspy-advanced-module-composition/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OmidZamani/dspy-skills --skill dspy-advanced-module-composition -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- aggregate predictions from multiple DSPy modules via majority voting
- synthesize answers from multiple reasoning chains using MultiChainComparison
- build multi-step RAG pipelines with query rewriting and validation
- implement fallback module execution when primary reasoning fails

## Example prompts
- Create an ensemble of three DSPy predictors with majority voting for QA
- Implement a MultiChainComparison pipeline that evaluates three reasoning paths
- Build a sequential DSPy module that rewrites queries, retrieves passages, and validates outputs

# DSPy Advanced Module Composition

## Goal

Compose complex DSPy programs using the Ensemble optimizer, MultiChainComparison for reasoning synthesis, and sequential module patterns.

## When to Use

- Need consensus from multiple approaches
- Comparing different reasoning strategies
- Building robust pipelines with fallbacks
- Complex multi-step workflows with branching
- Ensemble methods for improved accuracy

## Inputs

| Input | Type | Description |
|-------|------|-------------|
| `modules` | `list[dspy.Module]` | Modules to compose |
| `composition_type` | `str` | "ensemble", "sequential", "comparison" |

## Outputs

| Output | Type | Description |
|--------|------|-------------|
| `composed_program` | `dspy.Module` | Composed multi-module program |

## Workflow

### Phase 1: Ensemble Voting

Combine multiple programs using the Ensemble optimizer:

```python
import dspy
from dspy.teleprompt import Ensemble
dspy.configure(lm=dspy.LM("openai/gpt-4o-mini"))
# Define a signature for the task
class BasicQA(dspy.Signature):
    """Answer questions with short factoid answers."""
    question = dspy.InputField()
    answer = dspy.OutputField()
# Create multiple program instances (should be optimized/compiled programs)
# For simple demonstration, we'll use different predictors
program1 = dspy.Predict(BasicQA)
program2 = dspy.ChainOfThought(BasicQA)
program3 = dspy.Predict(BasicQA)
# Ensemble is an optimizer that compiles programs together
ensemble = Ensemble(reduce_fn=dspy.majority)
ensembled_program = ensemble.compile([program1, program2, program3])
# Use the ensembled program
result = ensembled_program(question="What is 2 + 2?")
print(result.answer)  # Voted answer
```

### Phase 2: MultiChainComparison

Compare multiple reasoning attempts:

```python
import dspy
class BasicQA(dspy.Signature):
    """Answer questions with short factoid answers."""
    question = dspy.InputField()
    answer = dspy.OutputField(desc="often between 1 and 5 words")
class ComparisonPipeline(dspy.Module):
    def __init__(self):
````
