# dse-loop

Runs your program, reads the metric, picks the next parameters, repeats. Stops when the objective is met or the budget runs out.

## What it does

The skill drives a design space exploration loop: run the program, parse the objective metric from its output, choose the next design point, iterate. It targets computer architecture and EDA work — simulation, synthesis, RTL parameterization, compiler flags, placement and routing.

If you name parameters but give no ranges, the skill reads the source first: argparse and click definitions, config files, Makefile variables, `#define`, SystemVerilog `parameter`. Then it infers sensible values by parameter type and writes the guesses to `dse_results/inferred_params.md` for you to review. It starts with 3–5 values per parameter, and when the best result sits at a range boundary it extends that range by one step and logs the extension.

Defaults are a 2h budget, a cap of 50 design points, patience of 10 iterations without improvement, and minimize as the objective. All four are overridden inline in the argument. The skill refuses `sudo`, recursive deletion, `git push`, `git reset --hard`, and killing processes it did not start — if a step needs any of that, it stops and reports back. Do not wrap it in `/loop` or `CronCreate`: it already loops internally, so an external scheduler just duplicates runs.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill dse-loop -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dse-loop/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dse-loop/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill dse-loop -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dse-loop/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill dse-loop -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dse-loop/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep dse-loop
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dse-loop/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill dse-loop -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/dse-loop
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dse-loop/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill dse-loop -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- sweep cache size and associativity in gem5 to raise IPC
- tune yosys optimization passes until timing closes
- find FIFO depth and pipeline stages that hit a throughput target
- scan gcc flags and unroll factors for runtime
- search utilization and aspect ratio in openroad for wirelength

## Example prompts
- /dse-loop "gem5 — params: cache size, assoc, ROB size; objective: maximize IPC; timeout: 4h, max_iterations: 100"
- /dse-loop "yosys — optimization passes and target freq; objective: minimize area at timing closure"
- /dse-loop "verilator — data width, FIFO depth, pipeline stages; objective: throughput at min area, patience: 15"

# DSE Loop: Autonomous Design Space Exploration

> 🔁 **Do not wrap this skill in `/loop` / `CronCreate`.** It already loops
> internally until its objective is met or it times out. Unlike the
> verdict-bearing review/audit skills, its stop gate is an **objective
> machine-checkable metric** (Type-A), so its self-termination is safe
> same-model — the reason not to wrap it is **scheduler duplication**, not the
> verdict fence. See
> [`shared-references/external-cadence.md`](../shared-references/external-cadence.md).

Autonomously explore a design space: run → analyze → pick next parameters → repeat, until the objective is met or timeout is reached. Designed for computer architecture and EDA problems.

## Context: $ARGUMENTS

## Safety Rules — READ FIRST

**NEVER do any of the following:**
- `sudo` anything
- `rm -rf`, `rm -r`, or any recursive deletion
- `rm` any file you did not create in this session
- Overwrite existing source files without reading them first
- `git push`, `git reset --hard`, or any destructive git operation
- Kill processes you did not start

**If a step requires any of the above, STOP and report to the user.**

## Constants (override via $ARGUMENTS)

| Constant | Default | Description |
|----------|---------|-------------|
| `TIMEOUT` | 2h | Total wall-clock budget. Stop exploring after this. |
| `MAX_ITERATIONS` | 50 | Hard cap on number of design points evaluated. |
| `PATIENCE` | 10 | Stop early if no improvement for this many consecutive iterations. |
| `OBJECTIVE` | minimize | `minimize` or `maximize` the target metric. |

Override inline: `/dse-loop "task desc — timeout: 4h, max_iterations: 100, patience: 15"`

## Typical Use Cases

| Problem | Program | Parameters | Objective |
