## What it does

The skill takes a file from disk, pushes it through the same internal endpoint GitHub's web UI uses, and prints a ready-to-paste reference: `![name](url)` for images, a bare URL for video, `[name](url)` for anything else. There is no public API for this, which is why the workaround exists.

Four steps run in order. First a prerequisite check: `gh auth status`, the `gh-image` extension at v1.4.0 or newer, and a session credential when the file is not an image or video. Then the skill resolves the path, states the files and target repo, and waits for your confirmation. From there it either posts through `gh image ... -- issue comment <n>` or hands you the URL to embed yourself. Last step counts matches to confirm the reference actually landed.

The session credential is the awkward part. It is the `user_session` cookie, it grants full account access, and GitHub offers nothing narrower for this endpoint. The skill tells you not to print or log its value. It also will not install or authenticate anything on your behalf, so a missing extension means running `gh extension install drogers0/gh-image` yourself. An upload publishes the file with no undo, so that confirmation prompt is worth taking seriously.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add drogers0/gh-image --skill github-image-upload -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/github-image-upload/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/github-image-upload/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add drogers0/gh-image --skill github-image-upload -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/github-image-upload/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add drogers0/gh-image --skill github-image-upload -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/github-image-upload/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install drogers0/gh-image github-image-upload
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/github-image-upload/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add drogers0/gh-image --skill github-image-upload -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/drogers0/gh-image --path skills/github-image-upload
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/github-image-upload/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add drogers0/gh-image --skill github-image-upload -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/drogers0/gh-image/tree/HEAD/skills/github-image-upload/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- attach a screenshot to a PR description
- show failing test logs inside an issue
- embed before/after images in a PR comment
- attach a PDF or zip to a GitHub discussion
- get an attachment URL for a README or commit message

## Example prompts
- Attach a screenshot to the PR description
- Add this log to the issue
- Show the test results in a PR comment

# Upload images and files to GitHub (gh-image)

[`gh-image`](https://github.com/drogers0/gh-image) (MIT, same author as this skill)
uploads files through the internal endpoint GitHub's web UI uses — there is no public
API — and prints a ready-to-paste reference: an `![name](url)` embed for images, a
bare URL for videos, a `[name](url)` link for anything else. This skill runs it and
embeds the result.

Follow these steps exactly unless they conflict with security policies you have been
given; if they do, stop and present the conflict rather than resolving it yourself.

## Prerequisites

Check these first. Report failures — do not install or authenticate for the user.

1. `gh auth status` — if it fails, tell the user to run `gh auth login`.

2. `gh extension list | grep 'drogers0/gh-image' && gh image --version`

   Needs v1.4.0+, the release that added the `--` form used below (`--version`
   prints `gh-image 1.4.0`; compare semantically, so `1.10.0` ≥ `1.4.0`). Missing → the user runs `gh extension install
   drogers0/gh-image`. Older → the user runs `gh extension upgrade gh-image`. `dev` →
   a local build, warn and continue. Never run install or upgrade yourself.

3. A session credential, needed for files other than images and video, and for
   repositories you cannot push to (everything else uploads with the `gh` token,
