## What it does

The skill loads Drizzle ORM context for Cloudflare D1 into your agent. It covers `drizzle.config.ts` setup, table definitions with `sqliteTable`, relations, and the generate-then-apply migration flow. A separate section walks through common failures: `D1_ERROR: Cannot use BEGIN TRANSACTION`, `FOREIGN KEY constraint failed`, `env.DB is undefined`, and type inference blowups.

D1 has no real transactions. The skill pushes you to `db.batch([...])` instead of `db.transaction()`, since SQL `BEGIN TRANSACTION` fails there. Dates go in as `integer` with `mode: 'timestamp'` because D1 has no native date type, and dynamic defaults need `.$defaultFn()` rather than `.default()`.

Migrations run through Wrangler only: `drizzle-kit generate`, then `wrangler d1 migrations apply` with `--local` before `--remote`. Don't mix `drizzle-kit migrate` with `wrangler apply`. Remote migrations and Studio need `accountId`, `databaseId` and `token` in the config, pulled from environment variables rather than committed. `dialect: 'sqlite'` is required in `drizzle.config.ts`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill drizzle-orm-d1 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/drizzle-orm-d1/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/drizzle-orm-d1/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill drizzle-orm-d1 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/drizzle-orm-d1/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill drizzle-orm-d1 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/drizzle-orm-d1/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install secondsky/claude-skills drizzle-orm-d1
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/drizzle-orm-d1/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill drizzle-orm-d1 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/secondsky/claude-skills --path plugins/drizzle-orm-d1/skills/drizzle-orm-d1
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/drizzle-orm-d1/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill drizzle-orm-d1 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- define a D1 schema in TypeScript instead of hand-written SQL
- generate a migration and apply it locally, then to production
- swap a broken transaction for the D1 batch API
- fix FOREIGN KEY constraint failed with cascading deletes
- get row types without hitting excessively deep type instantiation

## Example prompts
- Write a D1 schema for users and posts with drizzle-orm/sqlite-core and add the relations
- Generate a migration from my current schema and give me the local apply commands
- This code throws D1_ERROR: Cannot use BEGIN TRANSACTION — rewrite it with db.batch()

# Drizzle ORM for Cloudflare D1

**Status**: Production Ready ✅
**Last Updated**: 2025-12-14
**Latest Version**: drizzle-orm@0.45.2, drizzle-kit@0.31.10
**Dependencies**: cloudflare-d1, cloudflare-worker-base

---

## Quick Start (10 Minutes)

### 1. Install Drizzle

```bash
bun add drizzle-orm drizzle-kit
```

### 2. Configure Drizzle Kit

Create `drizzle.config.ts`:

```typescript
import { defineConfig } from 'drizzle-kit';
export default defineConfig({
  schema: './src/db/schema.ts',
  out: './migrations',
  dialect: 'sqlite',          // MANDATORY since drizzle-kit 0.21 (D1 = sqlite)
  driver: 'd1-http',          // D1 HTTP driver for remote migrations/Studio
  dbCredentials: {            // MANDATORY: drizzle-kit 0.30+ tightened zod validation
    accountId: process.env.CLOUDFLARE_ACCOUNT_ID!,
    databaseId: process.env.CLOUDFLARE_DATABASE_ID!,
    token: process.env.CLOUDFLARE_D1_TOKEN!,
  },
});
```

> **drizzle-kit 0.30/0.31 note**: `dialect` and `dbCredentials` are now strictly
> validated. A config that omits `dialect` or uses the old `connectionString`/
> `uri` keys will fail validation. For D1 use `dialect: 'sqlite'` +
> `driver: 'd1-http'` with `accountId`/`databaseId`/`token` (or wrangler-based
> credentials). The runtime `migrate()` signature in `drizzle-orm/<driver>/migrator`
