# drizzle-migrations

A skill that puts SQL migrations first in TypeScript projects on Drizzle ORM. Useful when the same schema has to hold across several environments.

## What it does

The skill lays out a migration-first workflow for Drizzle ORM projects. Schema changes start as a SQL migration, never as code. The migration is the source of truth; the TypeScript schema is written afterwards and mirrors it exactly.

The steps run in order: a migration file named like `0001_create_school_calendars.sql`, type generation with `pnpm drizzle-kit generate`, snapshots under `drizzle/meta/XXXX_snapshot.json`, then the TypeScript schema in `src/lib/db/schema/` split by domain. Column names in code match SQL (`school_id`), while properties use camelCase. Indexes and constraints stay in SQL.

CI gets its own step: `drizzle-kit check` compares snapshots against the schema, `drizzle-kit push --dry-run` runs the migration without applying it, followed by `tsc --noEmit` and linting. The dry-run needs `DATABASE_URL`, so that step fails without a database connection string. Snapshots are meant to be committed to git — skip that and drift detection has nothing to compare against.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill drizzle-migrations -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/drizzle-migrations/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/drizzle-migrations/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill drizzle-migrations -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/drizzle-migrations/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill drizzle-migrations -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/drizzle-migrations/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills drizzle-migrations
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/drizzle-migrations/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill drizzle-migrations -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/typescript/data/drizzle-migrations
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/drizzle-migrations/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill drizzle-migrations -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/typescript/data/drizzle-migrations/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add a table without letting schemas drift between environments
- generate TypeScript types from a SQL migration
- catch schema drift during a pull request
- split schemas by domain instead of one large file
- test a migration without applying it to the database

## Example prompts
- Write a SQL migration for the school_calendars table following this skill
- Generate the TypeScript schema from the migration and split it by domain
- Set up schema drift checks in CI with drizzle-kit check

# Drizzle ORM Database Migrations (TypeScript)

Migration-first database development workflow using Drizzle ORM for TypeScript/JavaScript projects.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Working with Drizzle ORM in TypeScript/JavaScript projects
- Need to create or modify database schema
- Want migration-first development workflow
- Setting up new database tables or columns
- Need to ensure schema consistency across environments

## Core Principle: Migration-First Development

**Critical Rule**: Schema changes ALWAYS start with migrations, never code-first.

### Why Migration-First?
- ✅ SQL migrations are the single source of truth
- ✅ Prevents schema drift between environments
- ✅ Enables rollback and versioning
- ✅ Forces explicit schema design decisions
- ✅ TypeScript types generated from migrations
- ✅ CI/CD can validate schema changes

### Anti-Pattern (Code-First)
❌ **WRONG**: Writing TypeScript schema first
```typescript
// DON'T DO THIS FIRST
export const users = pgTable('users', {
  id: uuid('id').primaryKey(),
  email: text('email').notNull(),
});
```

### Correct Pattern (Migration-First)
✅ **CORRECT**: Write SQL migration first
```sql
-- drizzle/0001_add_users_table.sql
CREATE TABLE users (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
  email TEXT NOT NULL UNIQUE,
  created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW()
);
```

## Complete Migration Workflow

### Step 1: Design Schema in SQL Migration

Create descriptive SQL migration file:

```sql
-- drizzle/0001_create_school_calendars.sql
CREATE TABLE school_calendars (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
  school_id UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES schools(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
  start_date DATE NOT NULL,
  end_date DATE NOT NULL,
  academic_year TEXT NOT NULL,
  created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW(),
  updated_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW()
);
-- Add indexes for query performance
CREATE INDEX idx_school_calendars_school_id ON school_calendars(school_id);
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE f860a8553d33e99c

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the f860a8553d33e99c tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
