# vertical-slice

Builds a vertical slice before production starts: one complete start-to-resolution cycle, to see whether the game can actually ship on schedule.

## What it does

This skill answers a question a concept prototype cannot: can the whole game loop be built at production quality, on schedule? Run it late in pre-production, once GDDs, architecture and UX specs are done. The slice is a near-production-quality build covering one complete [start → challenge → resolution] cycle. It validates the pipeline, whether the architecture decisions hold up, whether the fun survived full design, and velocity — the build time becomes your real production rate estimate.

The work runs in phases. First the skill reads `CLAUDE.md`, `design/gdd/game-concept.md`, `design/gdd/systems-index.md`, `docs/architecture/architecture.md` and `docs/architecture/control-manifest.md` by section: it finds headings with Grep and reads the ranges with offset and limit. Then it states a falsifiable validation question — does a player hit the core fantasy within N minutes, and can the team build one such loop in X days. Plan, implementation under `prototypes/[concept-name]-vertical-slice/`, then a multi-turn loop: you run the build, report what you see, the skill iterates.

Target scope is 3–5 minutes of continuous gameplay. If your slice plays longer, cut content rather than quality, because a rough build proves nothing about production. Progress goes to `production/session-state/active.md`, the main recovery point when an engine build spans many sessions. The `--review` flag overrides `review_mode` for a single run; defaults live in `.claude/docs/config-resolution.md`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill vertical-slice -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/vertical-slice/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/vertical-slice/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill vertical-slice -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/vertical-slice/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill vertical-slice -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/vertical-slice/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios vertical-slice
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/vertical-slice/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill vertical-slice -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --path .claude/skills/vertical-slice
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/vertical-slice/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill vertical-slice -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- check whether the architecture survives a full game loop
- estimate real production rate from slice build time
- confirm the prototype's fun survived full design
- build one start → challenge → resolution cycle before production
- re-validate the slice after a pivot sent you back to the GDDs

## Example prompts
- run vertical-slice and define the slice scope for our game
- vertical-slice --review lean — build the slice from the current GDDs
- run vertical-slice again after the architecture revisions

# Vertical Slice

## Purpose

The **vertical slice** answers a different question from the concept prototype:
*"Can we build this full game loop at production quality, on schedule?"*

**Default use** — run late in Pre-Production, after GDDs, architecture, and UX
specs are complete. It is a near-production-quality build demonstrating one complete
[start → challenge → resolution] cycle.

**Post-pivot?** If a PIVOT verdict from an earlier vertical slice sent you back to
revise GDDs and architecture, run this again after revisions to re-validate. It can
be run as many times as needed until a PROCEED or KILL verdict is reached.

It validates:

1. The pipeline (can the team actually produce this quality of content?)
2. Execution feasibility (are the architecture decisions correct for this game?)
3. Fun survival (does the fun from the concept prototype survive full design?)
4. **Velocity** (how long did this take? That's your real production rate estimate.)

**Earlier in the project?** If you haven't written GDDs yet and want to validate
whether the core idea is worth designing, run `/prototype` (concept prototype) instead.
