## What it does

The skill walks through seven principles: discoverability, affordance, signifiers, feedback, mapping, constraints and conceptual models. Each one gets its own pass, with the specific screens and steps named as evidence.

You supply an interface description — purpose, users, key flows, platform. Screenshots, links, a task list and existing user complaints are optional. The agent simulates real interaction, tags every violation from Catastrophic down to Low, and proposes one to three concrete changes per principle. The final report groups related problems, ranks them by severity and frequency, and gives an overall score from 1 to 10.

Fetched URLs and images are treated as untrusted data, so instructions hidden inside a page never get executed. Keep in mind the output is a simulated expert review, not user research: it points you toward the testing you still need to run.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill don-norman-principles-audit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/don-norman-principles-audit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/don-norman-principles-audit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill don-norman-principles-audit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/don-norman-principles-audit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill don-norman-principles-audit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/don-norman-principles-audit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mastepanoski/claude-skills don-norman-principles-audit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/don-norman-principles-audit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill don-norman-principles-audit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mastepanoski/claude-skills --path skills/don-norman-principles-audit
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/don-norman-principles-audit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill don-norman-principles-audit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mastepanoski/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/don-norman-principles-audit/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- surface features users never discover on their own
- flag buttons that read as disabled while they are active
- check whether the system confirms what an action did
- map user complaints onto specific design principles
- order fixes by how much they affect critical tasks

## Example prompts
- audit this interface against Don Norman's seven principles, here is the description and screenshots
- evaluate the checkout screen and list violations with severity levels
- compare two navigation layouts on affordance and signifiers

# Don Norman Principles UX Audit

This skill enables AI agents to perform a **human-centered evaluation** of usability and intuitiveness for apps, websites, or digital interfaces using **Don Norman's 7 fundamental design principles** from *The Design of Everyday Things*.

The principles emphasize discoverability, natural perception, and cognitive load reduction. Use this skill to detect intuitive frustrations (like digital "Norman doors"), improve user experience, and propose redesigns.

Combine with "Nielsen Heuristics UX Audit" or "UX Audit and Rethink" skills for comprehensive audits.

## When to Use This Skill

Invoke this skill when:
- Evaluating the intuitiveness of an interface
- Identifying usability problems from a human-centered perspective
- Assessing how naturally users can discover and use features
- Auditing digital products for cognitive friction
- Planning UX improvements based on fundamental design principles

## Inputs Required

When executing this audit, gather:

- **interface_description**: Detailed interface description (purpose, users, key flows, platform: web/mobile) [REQUIRED]
- **screenshots_or_links**: URLs of screenshots, wireframes, or live site/app [OPTIONAL]
- **user_tasks**: Representative user tasks (e.g., "log in", "add to cart", "navigate menu") [OPTIONAL]
- **existing_feedback**: User comments or pain points [OPTIONAL]

## The 7 Principles (Standard Edition)

Evaluate against these principles from Don Norman's revised edition:

### 1. Discoverability
**Can users determine what actions are possible and the current system state just by looking?**
- The design must make action possibilities visible from the start
- Users shouldn't need to hunt for features or guess what's possible

### 2. Affordance
**Do elements naturally suggest their possible use?**
- Buttons should look pressable
- Sliders should invite sliding
- Physical or perceived properties that determine use

### 3. Signifiers
**Are there clear signals (icons, labels, colors) indicating where and how to act?**
- Explicit cues that complement affordances
- Visual, auditory, or tactile indicators of what actions to take

### 4. Feedback
**Does the system respond immediately to each action, informing what happened and the new state?**
- Must be complete, continuous, and understandable
```
