## What it does

A Honeydew domain is a small governance layer over the semantic model. It decides which entities are visible, can narrow fields inside them through field selectors, and carries semantic `filters` that run on every query in that scope. `source_filters` work earlier at the source level and exist for performance.

There is no dedicated `create_domain` tool. You write domain YAML and send it to `create_object` in `yaml_text`; edits go through `update_object`, with the `object_key` located first by `search_model` in `EXACT` mode. A successful call returns `ui_url`, and the skill asks the agent to print it so you can jump into the Honeydew app. Editor permission or higher is required.

Reuse works through `extends`: list one or more parents, override only the differing parts, and strip inherited items with `merge: remove`. Parents resolve left to right and the rightmost one wins on a name clash. The catch is a live link to the parent — editing a base domain quietly reshapes every child. Keep a domain standalone when it must not move with others.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill domain-creation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/domain-creation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/domain-creation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill domain-creation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/domain-creation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill domain-creation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/domain-creation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins domain-creation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/domain-creation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill domain-creation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --path skills/domain-creation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/domain-creation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill domain-creation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins/tree/HEAD/skills/domain-creation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Scope which entities and fields a team can see
- Attach a filter that runs on every query inside a domain
- Speed up slow queries with early source-level filters
- Factor shared config into a base domain and extend it
- Drop unwanted inherited items with `merge: remove`

## Example prompts
- Create a domain `sales_us` with `create_object` that extends `base_sales` and adds a US country filter
- Look up the domain `object_key` with `search_model` in `EXACT` mode, then update the YAML
- Print the `ui_url` from the create call so I can open the domain in Honeydew

description: Guides you through creating a Honeydew domain — a governance object that scopes entity/field visibility and applies mandatory filters — ideal for setting up contexts for deep analysis. Also covers domain hierarchy — extending parent domains, inheritance and merge rules, multiple inheritance, and removing inherited items.

## Prerequisites

Before creating domains, ensure you are on the correct workspace and branch. Use `get_session_workspace_and_branch` to check the current session context. For development work, create a branch with `create_workspace_branch` (the session switches automatically). See the `workspace-branch` skill for the full workspace/branch tool reference.

## Overview

A Honeydew **domain** is a lightweight governance object that defines a scoped business context over the semantic model.

Domains control:

- **Which entities** are visible (and optionally which fields within them via field selectors)
- **Semantic filters** (`filters`) — applied to every query in the domain, for governance and access control
- **Source filters** (`source_filters`) — applied early at the source level, for performance optimization

Domains are the primary mechanism for creating focused, governed views of the model for specific teams, use cases, or analysis contexts.

Domains can also **extend one or more parent domains** (`extends`), inheriting and building on their configuration. This lets you compose reusable base domains into specialized, team- or use-case-specific views. See [Domain Hierarchy](#domain-hierarchy) below.

> This skill focuses on domain creation and management.
> Use `entity-creation` to create entities and `attribute-creation` / `metric-creation` to add fields before scoping them into a domain.
> To expose a domain for AI analysis, create an agent referencing it using `create_agent` (MCP agent tools) or the Honeydew Studio agent builder.

## Creation Method

### create_object with YAML

Domains are created using `create_object` with domain YAML. There is no specialized `create_domain` tool.

Parameters:

- `yaml_text` — YAML defining the domain

Required permission: Editor or higher.

### Update: update_object

1. Use `search_model` (with `search_mode: EXACT`) to find the domain's `object_key`.
