## What it does

docs-cleaner runs in two modes. Post-change governance: a port, path, env var, deploy step or test changed, and the skill checks which documents now describe the old world. Consolidation: one topic has spread across several files, each partly right, none authoritative.

Everything follows from a drift test. For each claim the skill asks three questions in order. Can the value be computed from what is already recorded? Then it is derived, and it does not get written down. Is the same fact authoritatively defined elsewhere? Then it is a copy, and it needs a link. Only a fact that independently records what was true at a moment stays as a historical observation. Its past value never gets replaced with a current one.

Deletion comes after analysis. The skill weighs each section's value before proposing removal, because archiving a document, dropping a derived total and cutting a cross-reference are all deletions. When the evidence does not settle whether a claim is derived, copied or independently observed, it stays unresolved and the gap goes into the report. Both modes cover `CLAUDE.md` and `AGENTS.md`. For a single oversized file where the problem is size and layering rather than truth or duplication, the author points to the `claude-md-progressive-disclosurer` skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill docs-cleaner -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/docs-cleaner/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/docs-cleaner/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill docs-cleaner -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/docs-cleaner/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill docs-cleaner -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/docs-cleaner/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills docs-cleaner
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/docs-cleaner/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill docs-cleaner -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path daymade-docs/docs-cleaner
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/docs-cleaner/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill docs-cleaner -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills/tree/HEAD/daymade-docs/docs-cleaner/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find docs that lie after a port or path change
- merge several files on one topic into a single authority
- strip recomputed totals and counts out of the prose
- repair cross-references left without a target
- check `CLAUDE.md` and `AGENTS.md` for duplicates

## Example prompts
- I changed the port and the config path, check which docs are now wrong
- clean up the docs, there are too many files on the same topic
- check the docs for inconsistencies and dead links

  Consolidates redundant documentation while preserving all valuable content; keeps a doc
  set truthful after things change. Modes: (1) POST-CHANGE GOVERNANCE — when code,
  scripts, config, env vars, ports, paths, deployment, auth, tests, or a documented
  procedure changed; also "which docs are now wrong", "check docs for inconsistencies",
  "过时的命令/路径", "文档同步". Use it even when the user mentions only the change and never
  the docs — updating them is part of the change, not optional cleanup.
  (2) CONSOLIDATION — "clean up docs", "documentation bloat", "reduce documentation
  sprawl", "consolidate documentation", "too many doc files", "merge redundant docs",
  "merge these docs", "文档太多/太乱", multiple files covering the same topic, or
  documentation exceeding 500 lines across multiple files on similar topics. Finds stale
  copies of a fact changed in only one place, values that should never have been persisted
  (counts, totals, "N items", restated summaries), rival definitions that drift apart,
  and orphaned cross-references.

# Docs Cleaner

Documentation goes wrong in recurring ways, and they need different work.

**It rots.** Something changed — a port, a path, a procedure, a decision — and the docs
still describe the old world. The field's name for this is *documentation rot* or *version
drift*: artifacts fall out of sync one at a time until people stop trusting the set.

**It sprawls.** The same topic accumulates three files, each partly right, none
authoritative.

They trace to one root cause: **a fact was written down in more places than it was
defined.** Everything below follows from fixing that.

## Core principle (governs both modes)

**Critical evaluation before deletion. Never blindly delete.** Analyze each section's
unique value before proposing removal. The goal is reduction without information loss.

This governs every deletion-shaped action in this skill, not just consolidation: archiving
a document, dropping a derived value, and removing a cross-reference are all deletions and
all owe the same analysis first. "It looked redundant" is not that analysis.

## Which mode are you in?

| The user said / the situation | Mode |
|---|---|
| "I changed X" / a diff exists / a procedure was updated | **1 — Post-change governance** |
