## What it does

The skill organizes docs around four needs: learning through tutorials, completing tasks with how-to guides, looking up facts in references, and understanding concepts through explanations. It also suggests a navigation structure with getting started, guides, an API reference, and resources. Each page should explain what it covers and why it matters before showing how to use it and what to read next.

For quickstarts, the skill lays out prerequisites, installation, configuration, a runnable step, and follow-up material. For API endpoints, it calls for authentication details, request parameters, response examples, and common errors. Code samples should work when copied. Suggested quickstart measurements include time to a successful API call, drop-off points, and completion rate.

Before shaping the docs strategy, the skill recommends reviewing `developer-audience-context` to understand what developers search for and which languages and frameworks they use. That context matters: without it, the proposed information architecture has no audience needs to address.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill docs-as-marketing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/docs-as-marketing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/docs-as-marketing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill docs-as-marketing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/docs-as-marketing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill docs-as-marketing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/docs-as-marketing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jonathimer/devmarketing-skills docs-as-marketing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/docs-as-marketing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill docs-as-marketing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --path skills/docs-as-marketing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/docs-as-marketing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill docs-as-marketing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/docs-as-marketing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- organize docs around distinct developer needs
- map navigation across onboarding, guides, and API references
- revise a quickstart to reach a working API call
- audit endpoint pages for request, response, and error details
- choose measures for quickstart completion

## Example prompts
- Rework our docs navigation around the tasks developers come here to complete.
- Review this quickstart and point out where a developer may fail to reach a successful API call.
- Draft an API endpoint page outline covering authentication, request parameters, responses, and errors.

# Documentation as Marketing

Documentation is often a developer's first meaningful interaction with your product. Great docs don't just explain—they market. They reduce friction, build trust, and turn curious visitors into active users who recommend your product to others.

## Overview

Developer documentation serves multiple marketing functions:
- **Acquisition**: Docs rank in search and attract developers actively seeking solutions
- **Activation**: Well-structured quickstarts reduce time-to-value
- **Retention**: Comprehensive references keep developers building
- **Referral**: Developers share docs they love, not marketing pages

This skill covers the intersection of technical writing and developer marketing—creating documentation that serves both education and conversion goals.

## Before You Start

Review the **developer-audience-context** skill to understand your target developers:
- What problems are they searching for solutions to?
- What's their technical sophistication level?
- What frameworks and languages do they use?
- Where do they currently look for answers?

Your documentation strategy should directly address these audience insights.

## Information Architecture That Converts

### The Four Types of Documentation

Structure your docs around the four types developers need:

| Type | Purpose | Marketing Function |
|------|---------|-------------------|
| **Tutorials** | Learning-oriented, step-by-step | Builds confidence, shows product value |
| **How-to Guides** | Task-oriented, problem-solving | Demonstrates capability breadth |
| **Reference** | Information-oriented, accurate | Proves product depth and reliability |
| **Explanation** | Understanding-oriented, conceptual | Establishes thought leadership |

### Navigation That Reduces Bounce

**Good Navigation Structure:**
