# dockerfile-optimizer

A skill that rewrites your Dockerfile around multi-stage builds: smaller images, faster builds, working layer cache. Useful when the image has bloated or CI drags.

## What it does

The skill walks your Dockerfile through six steps: analyze it, split build and runtime, reorder instructions for layer caching, shrink the image, harden it, add a healthcheck. Ready-made examples cover Node.js, Next.js, Python, Go, Rust and Java, with a size table from `node:20` down to `gcr.io/distroless/nodejs20` and notes on which base fits which case.

Caching gets its own section. System packages and the user go first, then `package.json`, then `npm ci`, and source code last so a code edit does not blow away the dependency layer. There is a `.dockerignore` template too, covering `.git`, `node_modules`, `dist` and `.env*.local`. For hardening the skill adds a non-root user via `adduser` or `useradd`, sets `USER` in the runtime stage and writes a `HEALTHCHECK`.

One caveat: the examples assume the base images and package managers shown in the skill. On pnpm, yarn or a different distro you adapt the steps yourself. The skill edits the file and stops there — it does not build or run your image.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill dockerfile-optimizer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dockerfile-optimizer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dockerfile-optimizer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill dockerfile-optimizer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dockerfile-optimizer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill dockerfile-optimizer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dockerfile-optimizer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills dockerfile-optimizer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dockerfile-optimizer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill dockerfile-optimizer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path ci-cd/dockerfile-optimizer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dockerfile-optimizer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill dockerfile-optimizer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- shrink an image by moving to slim or distroless bases
- split a single-stage build into builder and runtime
- fix layer caching so `npm ci` survives code edits
- run the container as a non-root user with a healthcheck
- write a `.dockerignore` that keeps `.git` and `node_modules` out of the build context

## Example prompts
- optimize my Node.js Dockerfile
- the image is over a gigabyte, make it smaller
- rewrite this Dockerfile with multi-stage builds and a healthcheck

# Dockerfile Optimizer

Build optimized, secure, and cache-efficient Docker images following production best practices.

## Core Workflow

1. **Analyze current Dockerfile**: Identify optimization opportunities
2. **Implement multi-stage builds**: Separate build and runtime
3. **Optimize layer caching**: Order instructions efficiently
4. **Minimize image size**: Use slim base images and cleanup
5. **Add security hardening**: Non-root user, minimal permissions
6. **Configure health checks**: Ensure container health monitoring

## Base Image Selection

### Image Size Comparison

| Base Image | Size | Use Case |
|------------|------|----------|
| `node:20` | ~1GB | Development only |
| `node:20-slim` | ~200MB | General production |
| `node:20-alpine` | ~130MB | Size-critical production |
| `gcr.io/distroless/nodejs20` | ~120MB | Maximum security |

### Recommendations by Language

```dockerfile
# Node.js
FROM node:20-alpine
# Python
FROM python:3.12-slim
# Go
FROM golang:1.22-alpine AS builder
FROM scratch AS runtime  # Or gcr.io/distroless/static
# Rust
FROM rust:1.75-alpine AS builder
FROM alpine:3.19 AS runtime
# Java
FROM eclipse-temurin:21-jdk-alpine AS builder
FROM eclipse-temurin:21-jre-alpine AS runtime
```

## Multi-Stage Builds

### Node.js Application

```dockerfile
# ==================== Build Stage ====================
FROM node:20-alpine AS builder
WORKDIR /app
# Install dependencies first (cache layer)
COPY package.json package-lock.json ./
RUN npm ci --ignore-scripts
# Copy source and build
COPY . .
RUN npm run build
# Prune dev dependencies
RUN npm prune --production
# ==================== Production Stage ====================
FROM node:20-alpine AS production
# Security: Create non-root user
RUN addgroup -g 1001 -S nodejs && \
    adduser -S nextjs -u 1001
WORKDIR /app
# Copy only necessary files
COPY --from=builder --chown=nextjs:nodejs /app/node_modules ./node_modules
COPY --from=builder --chown=nextjs:nodejs /app/dist ./dist
COPY --from=builder --chown=nextjs:nodejs /app/package.json ./
# Security: Switch to non-root user
USER nextjs
# Health check
HEALTHCHECK --interval=30s --timeout=3s --start-period=5s --retries=3 \
