## What it does

The skill provides production patterns for containerizing .NET 10 applications with Dockerfiles and local Docker Compose environments. It enforces multi-stage builds: compiling inside `mcr.microsoft.com/dotnet/sdk:10.0` and running inside `mcr.microsoft.com/dotnet/aspnet:10.0`. Project files like `.csproj` or `.slnx` are restored before copying application source code to keep NuGet cache layers intact.

Containers switch to the unprivileged `USER app` account, configured by default since .NET 8. Health probes are pushed to the orchestrator level via Kubernetes or Compose targeting `/health/live`. Standard ASP.NET and chiseled images lack a shell and curl. In-image `HEALTHCHECK` commands simply cannot run there.

If you build container images directly through the .NET SDK using `dotnet publish /t:PublishContainer` without a Dockerfile, load the `container-publish` skill instead.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill docker -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/docker/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/docker/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill docker -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/docker/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill docker -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/docker/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit docker
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/docker/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill docker -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --path skills/docker
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/docker/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill docker -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit/tree/HEAD/skills/docker/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set up multi-stage Dockerfiles for ASP.NET Core and .NET 10
- cache NuGet dependencies before copying source code
- run containers securely with the non-root app user
- configure external health checks for shell-less runtime images

## Example prompts
- Generate a multi-stage Dockerfile for my .NET 10 Web API using USER app.
- Create a docker-compose.yml file with .NET 10 API, PostgreSQL, and health check dependencies.
- Optimize NuGet layer caching in my Dockerfile for a multi-project .slnx solution.

## Core Principles

1. **Multi-stage builds always** — Separate build and runtime stages. Build in the SDK image, run in the ASP.NET runtime image.
2. **Non-root by default** — .NET container images support `USER app` by default since .NET 8. Never run as root in production.
3. **Layer caching matters** — Copy `.csproj` files and restore before copying source code. This caches NuGet dependencies across builds.
4. **Health probes at the orchestrator level** — Expose a `/health/live` endpoint and let Kubernetes/Compose probe it. Chiseled and default aspnet images have no shell or curl, so in-image `HEALTHCHECK` commands have nothing to run with.

## Patterns

### Multi-Stage Dockerfile for Web API

```dockerfile
# Stage 1: Build
FROM mcr.microsoft.com/dotnet/sdk:10.0 AS build
WORKDIR /src
# Copy project files and restore (cached layer)
COPY ["src/MyApp.Api/MyApp.Api.csproj", "src/MyApp.Api/"]
COPY ["src/MyApp.Domain/MyApp.Domain.csproj", "src/MyApp.Domain/"]
COPY ["Directory.Build.props", "."]
COPY ["Directory.Packages.props", "."]
RUN dotnet restore "src/MyApp.Api/MyApp.Api.csproj"
# Copy everything and build
COPY . .
RUN dotnet publish "src/MyApp.Api/MyApp.Api.csproj" \
    -c Release \
    -o /app/publish \
    --no-restore
# Stage 2: Runtime
FROM mcr.microsoft.com/dotnet/aspnet:10.0 AS runtime
WORKDIR /app
# Non-root user (default in .NET 8+ images)
USER app
COPY --from=build /app/publish .
EXPOSE 8080
ENTRYPOINT ["dotnet", "MyApp.Api.dll"]
```

### Container Health Probes

Prefer orchestrator-level probes (Kubernetes `livenessProbe`, Compose
`healthcheck`) over a Dockerfile `HEALTHCHECK` — the standard `aspnet` and
chiseled images ship no shell, no curl, and no wget, so there is nothing inside
the container to run the probe with. Point the orchestrator at `/health/live`:

```yaml
# docker-compose — probe from outside the app process
services:
  api:
    healthcheck:
      test: ["CMD-SHELL", "wget -qO- http://localhost:8080/health/live || exit 1"]
      interval: 30s
      timeout: 3s
      retries: 3
# Note: CMD-SHELL requires a shell + wget in the image. Use a non-chiseled
# variant for this, or better: let Kubernetes httpGet probes do it —
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 1ef7a1476f089b47 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
