## What it does

The skill handles the grunt work of containerizing web apps. It ships three Dockerfile variants: production with a multi-stage build and a non-root user, development with hot reload, and an nginx version for static exports. Alongside them come a `docker-compose.yml` for multi-service setups, a `.dockerignore` and an `nginx.conf` with compression and security headers.

Container management runs through bash scripts. `docker-build.sh` builds an image with the environment and tag you pass, `docker-run.sh` starts a container with port mapping and an env file, `docker-push.sh` sends images to Docker Hub, ECR, GCR or ACR, and `docker-cleanup.sh` frees disk space. Two references, `docker-best-practices.md` and `container-orchestration.md`, cover deployment to Kubernetes, Amazon ECS, Cloud Run and Azure Container Instances.

The skill advises against hardcoding secrets and against the `latest` tag — worth checking before your first production push. Deploying to Kubernetes or ECS needs cluster access and a configured CLI, and pushes only work with valid registry credentials.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker, Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill docker-containerization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/docker-containerization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/docker-containerization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill docker-containerization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/docker-containerization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill docker-containerization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/docker-containerization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills docker-containerization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/docker-containerization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill docker-containerization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --path dist/skills/docker-containerization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/docker-containerization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill docker-containerization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills/tree/HEAD/dist/skills/docker-containerization/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a production Next.js image with a multi-stage build
- spin up local development via docker-compose with hot reload
- push an image to ECR or GCR with a specific tag
- clean old containers and images off the disk
- prepare manifests for a Kubernetes deployment

## Example prompts
- Build a production Dockerfile for my Next.js app
- Set up docker-compose for local development with hot reload
- Push the image to ECR with tag v1.0.0

# Docker Containerization Skill

## Overview

Generate production-ready Docker configurations for modern web applications, particularly Next.js and Node.js projects. This skill provides Dockerfiles, docker-compose setups, bash scripts for container management, and comprehensive deployment guides for various orchestration platforms.

## Core Capabilities

### 1. Dockerfile Generation

Create optimized Dockerfiles for different environments:

**Production** (`assets/Dockerfile.production`):
- Multi-stage build reducing image size by 85%
- Alpine Linux base (~180MB final image)
- Non-root user execution for security
- Health checks and resource limits

**Development** (`assets/Dockerfile.development`):
- Hot reload support
- All dev dependencies included
- Volume mounts for live code updates

**Nginx Static** (`assets/Dockerfile.nginx`):
- Static export optimization
- Nginx reverse proxy included
- Smallest possible footprint

### 2. Docker Compose Configuration

Multi-container orchestration with `assets/docker-compose.yml`:
- Development and production services
- Network and volume management
- Health checks and logging
- Restart policies

### 3. Bash Scripts for Container Management

**docker-build.sh** - Build images with comprehensive options:
```bash
./docker-build.sh -e prod -t v1.0.0
./docker-build.sh -n my-app --no-cache --platform linux/amd64
```

**docker-run.sh** - Run containers with full configuration:
```bash
./docker-run.sh -i my-app -t v1.0.0 -d
./docker-run.sh -p 8080:3000 --env-file .env.production
```

**docker-push.sh** - Push to registries (Docker Hub, ECR, GCR, ACR):
```bash
./docker-push.sh -n my-app -t v1.0.0 --repo username/my-app
./docker-push.sh -r gcr.io/project --repo my-app --also-tag stable
```

**docker-cleanup.sh** - Free disk space:
```bash
./docker-cleanup.sh --all --dry-run  # Preview cleanup
