## What it does

The skill activates on its own when the agent touches a Dockerfile, a multi-stage build or `docker-compose.yml`. It carries rules for base image selection (Wolfi, Alpine, distroless, slim), layer ordering for cache reuse, `.dockerignore` templates and HEALTHCHECK examples. Dockerfile templates per language and an image-size checklist come with it.

Runtime security gets its own section: non-root user, `--cap-drop=ALL`, read-only filesystem, memory and CPU limits. For Compose there is network isolation, named volumes and log rotation so the disk does not fill up.

You need working knowledge of Docker to get anything out of this. The skill does not build or scan images for you — it gives the agent rules to edit your files by. If your project has no Docker, there is nothing here to install.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill docker-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/docker-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/docker-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill docker-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/docker-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill docker-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/docker-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace docker-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/docker-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill docker-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --path plugins/docker-master/skills/docker-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/docker-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill docker-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace/tree/HEAD/plugins/docker-master/skills/docker-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a production Dockerfile without wasted layers
- shrink an image with a multi-stage build
- pick the right base image for the job
- lock a container down from extra privileges
- set up healthchecks and resource limits

## Example prompts
- Rewrite my Dockerfile following best practices and drop extra layers
- Turn this into a multi-stage build for a Node app
- Check my docker-compose.yml for network isolation and limits

  Comprehensive Docker best practices for images, containers, and production deployments.
  PROACTIVELY activate for: (1) writing production-ready Dockerfiles, (2) multi-stage builds for lean images, (3) base image selection (distroless, alpine, scratch, slim), (4) layer caching and ordering, (5) .dockerignore hygiene, (6) HEALTHCHECK and graceful shutdown, (7) non-root user and least-privilege patterns, (8) ENV vs ARG and secret handling, (9) tag/digest pinning and reproducibility, (10) Compose for local development.
  Provides: Dockerfile templates by language, image-size optimization checklist, .dockerignore template, HEALTHCHECK patterns, and Compose dev-stack examples.

## 🚨 CRITICAL GUIDELINES

### Windows File Path Requirements

**MANDATORY: Always Use Backslashes on Windows for File Paths**

When using Edit or Write tools on Windows, you MUST use backslashes (`\`) in file paths, NOT forward slashes (`/`).

**Examples:**
- ❌ WRONG: `D:/repos/project/file.tsx`
- ✅ CORRECT: `D:\repos\project\file.tsx`

This applies to:
- Edit tool file_path parameter
- Write tool file_path parameter
- All file operations on Windows systems

### Documentation Guidelines

**NEVER create new documentation files unless explicitly requested by the user.**

- **Priority**: Update existing README.md files rather than creating new documentation
- **Repository cleanliness**: Keep repository root clean - only README.md unless user requests otherwise
- **Style**: Documentation should be concise, direct, and professional - avoid AI-generated tone
- **User preference**: Only create additional .md files when user specifically asks for documentation

# Docker Best Practices

This skill provides current Docker best practices across all aspects of container development, deployment, and operation.

## Image Best Practices

### Base Image Selection

**2025 Recommended Hierarchy:**
1. **Wolfi/Chainguard** (`cgr.dev/chainguard/*`) - Zero-CVE goal, SBOM included
2. **Alpine** (`alpine:3.19`) - ~7MB, minimal attack surface
3. **Distroless** (`gcr.io/distroless/*`) - ~2MB, no shell
4. **Slim variants** (`node:20-slim`) - ~70MB, balanced

**Key rules:**
- Always specify exact version tags: `node:20.11.0-alpine3.19`
- Never use `latest` (unpredictable, breaks reproducibility)
- Use official images from trusted registries
- Match base image to actual needs

### Dockerfile Structure

**Optimal layer ordering** (least to most frequently changing):
```dockerfile
1. Base image and system dependencies
2. Application dependencies (package.json, requirements.txt, etc.)
3. Application code
