# doc-to-markdown

Turns DOCX, PDF, PPTX and saved HTML into clean Markdown and fixes the usual conversion damage on its own. Useful when you need the text out of a document without hand-editing.

## What it does

The skill runs `scripts/convert.py` and builds output from two engines: Pandoc handles extraction, then eight post-processing steps clean the file up. For DOCX it repairs grid tables and simple tables, nested image paths like `media/media/`, Pandoc attributes such as `{width="..."}`, spacing around `**` in CJK text, indented code blocks, and escaped or double-bracket links.

For PDFs three cleanups run: OCR garbage blocks on image regions get dropped, repeated headers, footers and watermarks are removed (a line counts as repeating when it shows up on 60% of pages or more), and absolute image paths are rewritten relative to the output file. `--no-postprocess` turns this off. Two modes exist: quick by default, and heavy, where tools run in parallel and the best segments are picked by a quality score.

Know the limits before you rely on it. Duplicated paragraphs from pymupdf4llm stay in, tables split across pages are not merged, and a dotted table of contents gets read as a table. Cells overlapped by a diagonal watermark keep character shards, because the stripper works line by line. Dense infographics with text baked into the image come back as images only — reading that text needs a VLM pass, not this tool.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill doc-to-markdown -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/doc-to-markdown/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/doc-to-markdown/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill doc-to-markdown -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/doc-to-markdown/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill doc-to-markdown -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/doc-to-markdown/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills doc-to-markdown
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/doc-to-markdown/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill doc-to-markdown -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path daymade-docs/doc-to-markdown
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/doc-to-markdown/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill doc-to-markdown -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- get Markdown out of a DOCX without fixing tables by hand
- pull text from a PDF full of scans and watermarks
- move a saved HTML page into Markdown
- repair image paths after conversion
- fix bold spacing in Chinese text

## Example prompts
- convert document.docx to Markdown, put images in ./media
- turn this PDF into Markdown and strip the watermarks
- convert the saved page.html to Markdown

  Converts DOCX/PDF/PPTX and saved HTML/HTM to high-quality Markdown with automatic post-processing. Fixes pandoc grid tables, simple tables, image paths, CJK bold spacing, attribute noise, and code blocks; for PDFs also strips OCR garbage blocks, repeated headers/footers/watermarks, and absolute image paths from pymupdf4llm output. Benchmarked best-in-class (7.6/10) against Docling, MarkItDown, Pandoc raw, and Mammoth. # Doc to Markdown

Convert documents to high-quality markdown with intelligent multi-tool orchestration and automatic DOCX post-processing.

**Architecture**: Pandoc (best-in-class extraction) + 8 post-processing fixes (our value-add).

## Quick Start

```bash
# DOCX → Markdown (one command, zero manual fixes)
uv run --with pymupdf4llm --with markitdown scripts/convert.py document.docx -o output.md --assets-dir ./media
# PDF → Markdown
uv run --with pymupdf4llm --with markitdown scripts/convert.py document.pdf -o output.md
# Saved HTML → Markdown (Pandoc required; no remote fetching)
uv run scripts/convert.py page.html -o page.md
# Run tests
uv run --with pytest pytest scripts/test_convert.py -v
```

## Dual Mode

| Mode | Speed | Quality | Use Case |
|------|-------|---------|----------|
| **Quick** (default) | Fast | Good | Drafts, simple documents |
| **Heavy** | Slower | Best | Final documents, complex layouts |

## Tool Selection

| Format | Quick Mode | Heavy Mode |
|--------|-----------|------------|
| PDF | pymupdf4llm | pymupdf4llm + markitdown |
| DOCX | pandoc + post-processing | pandoc + markitdown |
| PPTX | markitdown | markitdown + pandoc |
| XLSX | markitdown | markitdown |
| HTML/HTM | pandoc + source-href retention check | unsupported; use the HTML quick path |

## Saved HTML And Website Manuals

For HTML/HTM, read [references/html-conversion.md](references/html-conversion.md)
before converting. Use `scripts/convert.py`; the default converts the whole body
and does not trim navigation. An explicit `--html-selector` selects exactly one
tag, `#id` or `.class`. `--html-heading-offset` shifts parsed headings for assembly
and rejects overflow beyond H6. Relative assets are not downloaded or copied.

Verify source `href` occurrences against the emitted Markdown AST, then rerun
