## What it does

The skill guides model pretraining from 8B up to 405B parameters using torchtitan. It provides TOML configuration workflows for FSDP2, tensor parallelism, pipeline parallelism, and context parallelism. The agent outputs exact commands for single-node setups and multi-node clusters managed by SLURM.

The workflow depends on `torch>=2.6.0`, `torchtitan>=0.2.0`, and `torchao>=0.5.0`. For H100 clusters, it details how to integrate Float8 quantization via torchao and activate `torch.compile`. This cuts memory pressure and speeds up training steps.

Memory limits require tuning activation checkpointing or adding gradient accumulation. Without modern PyTorch builds, these parallel features will fail.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill distributed-llm-pretraining-torchtitan -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill torchtitan -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/torchtitan/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/torchtitan/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill torchtitan -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/torchtitan/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill torchtitan -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/torchtitan/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs torchtitan
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/torchtitan/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill torchtitan -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 01-model-architecture/torchtitan
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/torchtitan/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill torchtitan -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- configure TOML training files for Llama 3.1 on single or multi-node setups
- set up 4D parallelism across up to 512 GPUs
- create SLURM batch scripts for distributed cluster runs
- enable Float8 and torch.compile for H100 hardware
- resolve Out of Memory errors with selective activation checkpointing

## Example prompts
- Create a TOML config for pretraining Llama 3.1 8B on 8 GPUs using torchtitan
- Write a SLURM submission script for a 32-node training run with tensor parallelism
- How do I enable Float8 training with torchao in torchtitan?

# TorchTitan - PyTorch Native Distributed LLM Pretraining

## Quick start

TorchTitan is PyTorch's official platform for large-scale LLM pretraining with composable 4D parallelism (FSDP2, TP, PP, CP), achieving 65%+ speedups over baselines on H100 GPUs.

**Installation**:
```bash
# From PyPI (stable)
pip install torchtitan
# From source (latest features, requires PyTorch nightly)
git clone https://github.com/pytorch/torchtitan
cd torchtitan
pip install -r requirements.txt
```

**Download tokenizer**:
```bash
# Get HF token from https://huggingface.co/settings/tokens
python scripts/download_hf_assets.py --repo_id meta-llama/Llama-3.1-8B --assets tokenizer --hf_token=...
```

**Start training on 8 GPUs**:
```bash
CONFIG_FILE="./torchtitan/models/llama3/train_configs/llama3_8b.toml" ./run_train.sh
```

## Common workflows

### Workflow 1: Pretrain Llama 3.1 8B on single node

Copy this checklist:

```
Single Node Pretraining:
- [ ] Step 1: Download tokenizer
- [ ] Step 2: Configure training
- [ ] Step 3: Launch training
- [ ] Step 4: Monitor and checkpoint
```

**Step 1: Download tokenizer**

```bash
python scripts/download_hf_assets.py \
  --repo_id meta-llama/Llama-3.1-8B \
  --assets tokenizer \
  --hf_token=YOUR_HF_TOKEN
```

**Step 2: Configure training**

Edit or create a TOML config file:

```toml
# llama3_8b_custom.toml
[job]
dump_folder = "./outputs"
description = "Llama 3.1 8B training"
[model]
name = "llama3"
flavor = "8B"
hf_assets_path = "./assets/hf/Llama-3.1-8B"
[optimizer]
name = "AdamW"
lr = 3e-4
[lr_scheduler]
warmup_steps = 200
[training]
local_batch_size = 2
seq_len = 8192
max_norm = 1.0
steps = 1000
dataset = "c4"
[parallelism]
data_parallel_shard_degree = -1  # Use all GPUs for FSDP
[activation_checkpoint]
mode = "selective"
selective_ac_option = "op"
[checkpoint]
enable = true
folder = "checkpoint"
interval = 500
```

**Step 3: Launch training**

```bash
# 8 GPUs on single node
CONFIG_FILE="./llama3_8b_custom.toml" ./run_train.sh
# Or explicitly with torchrun
torchrun --nproc_per_node=8 \
