## What it does

The skill reads notes, transcripts and recordings, tags observations by topic and keeps the ones that show up across several participants. It collects quotes with participant IDs attached, turns themes into insight statements that explain why something matters rather than just what was said, and proposes recommendations with a confidence note. Limitations get their own section: what you did not learn, where the sample is biased.

Output follows the template in `references/TEMPLATE.md` — research overview, key themes, notable quotes, insights, recommendations and an appendix. A finished example sits in `references/EXAMPLE.md`. The skill asks for at least 3 participants to find meaningful patterns, and the description suggests a round of 5 or more.

When `.claude/pm-skills.local.md` exists, the skill reads `phase` and `active_initiative` from it and writes personas plus findings as an `interpretation` artifact that `deliver-prd` picks up later. It proposes the entry and waits for confirmation first; with `memory_auto_append: true` it appends on its own. The file is re-read right before writing, because a parallel session can overwrite your edits and there is no way to recover them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill discover-interview-synthesis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/discover-interview-synthesis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/discover-interview-synthesis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill discover-interview-synthesis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/discover-interview-synthesis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill discover-interview-synthesis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/discover-interview-synthesis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install product-on-purpose/pm-skills discover-interview-synthesis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/discover-interview-synthesis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill discover-interview-synthesis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills --path skills/discover-interview-synthesis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/discover-interview-synthesis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill discover-interview-synthesis -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/discover-interview-synthesis/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull themes out of notes from several interviews
- pick quotes that show where users struggle
- write insights that give a reason, not a paraphrase
- rank recommendations by how strong the evidence is
- state research limitations and sample bias honestly

## Example prompts
- Synthesize the interviews in `interviews/` into themes, quotes and recommendations
- Turn five customer calls into one findings report
- Run discover-interview-synthesis over the usability session transcripts

# Interview Synthesis

An interview synthesis transforms raw user research data into structured insights that drive product decisions. Rather than simply listing what participants said, a good synthesis identifies patterns across conversations, connects observations to underlying user needs, and translates findings into actionable recommendations.

## When to Use

- After completing a round of user interviews (typically 5+ participants)
- Following customer discovery calls or sales feedback sessions
- After usability testing sessions to consolidate observations
- When stakeholders need a summary of research findings
- Before ideation sessions to ground the team in user reality

## When NOT to Use

- You are summarizing one internal meeting for its attendees -> use `foundation-meeting-recap`
- You need patterns across multiple meetings over time -> use `foundation-meeting-synthesize`
- Your data is survey responses rather than interviews -> use `measure-survey-analysis`
- The findings are synthesized and you are ready to frame the problem -> use `define-problem-statement`
- You have synthesized findings and want to map them onto a customer's journey across stages and touchpoints -> use `discover-journey-map`

## Instructions

When asked to synthesize interview findings, follow these steps:

1. **Gather the Raw Material**
