## What it does

The skill walks the agent through seven steps. You define the scope and pick the competitors first, then the agent gathers intelligence from public sources: websites, pricing pages, review sites, press releases and job postings. From there it builds a feature matrix with consistent ratings and a 2x2 positioning map on two axes that matter to your market.

One step is dedicated to writing down where competitors genuinely beat you. The instructions are blunt about it: dismissing rivals leads to weaker strategy. The analysis closes by turning observations into recommendations — where to compete head-on, where to differentiate, which gaps on the map nobody occupies yet.

Output follows the template in `references/TEMPLATE.md`: overview, market context, competitors analyzed, feature matrix, pricing comparison, positioning map, deep dives, gaps and opportunities, recommendations, sources and confidence, next steps. Every conclusion gets a confidence level, so verified data stays separate from inference. If you need market size rather than competitor positioning, this is the wrong skill — use `discover-market-sizing` instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill discover-competitive-analysis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/discover-competitive-analysis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/discover-competitive-analysis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill discover-competitive-analysis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/discover-competitive-analysis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill discover-competitive-analysis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/discover-competitive-analysis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install product-on-purpose/pm-skills discover-competitive-analysis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/discover-competitive-analysis/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- line up 3–5 competitors by features and pricing in one grid
- find white space on a positioning map
- work out why deals keep going to a rival
- prep material for a quarterly product planning review
- bring a new product hire up to speed on the market

## Example prompts
- Run a competitive analysis for our product: 3 direct competitors and 2 indirect, with a feature matrix and a 2x2 map
- We lost two deals last quarter — map the competitors' positioning and tell me where we should differentiate
- Compare pricing and features across the market before we launch the new tier

# Competitive Analysis

A competitive analysis provides structured insight into the competitive landscape, helping product teams understand where they stand relative to alternatives and identify opportunities for differentiation. Rather than exhaustively cataloging every competitor, an effective analysis focuses on actionable insights that inform product strategy.

## When to Use

- Before entering a new market or launching a new product
- When planning differentiation strategy for an existing product
- During quarterly or annual strategic planning reviews
- When evaluating build vs. buy decisions
- After losing deals to understand competitive positioning
- When onboarding new product team members to the market context

## When NOT to Use

- You need market size rather than competitor positioning -> use `discover-market-sizing`
- You are stress-testing strategic differentiation across the whole business model -> use `foundation-lean-canvas`, or `tool-foundation-sprint-differentiation` inside a Foundation Sprint
- You want to understand why customers switch products -> use `define-jtbd-canvas`; it examines competing solutions through the job lens
- The landscape is already mapped and you need the problem framed -> use `define-problem-statement`

## Instructions

When asked to create a competitive analysis, follow these steps:
