## What it does

This skill teaches the agent how to interact with GitHub repositories using the official `gh` CLI. It covers routines like checking pull requests, listing issues, and fetching raw endpoint data with `gh api`.

A primary focus is CI troubleshooting. The skill outlines a four-step sequence to investigate broken builds: running `gh pr checks`, listing recent runs via `gh run list`, viewing failed jobs with `gh run view`, and isolating failure logs with `--log-failed`. It also enforces structured JSON formatting using `--json` and filtering with `--jq`.

The environment must have the `gh` tool installed and authenticated. Running these commands outside a git checkout will fail unless the agent provides the `--repo owner/repo` flag or direct repository URLs.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dimillian/Skills --skill github -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/github/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/github/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dimillian/Skills --skill github -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/github/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dimillian/Skills --skill github -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/github/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Dimillian/Skills github
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/github/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dimillian/Skills --skill github -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Dimillian/Skills --path github
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/github/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Dimillian/Skills --skill github -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Dimillian/Skills/tree/HEAD/github/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- inspect failing CI checks on a pull request
- extract error logs from broken workflow runs
- query pull request fields using the GitHub API
- list and filter repository issues in JSON format

## Example prompts
- Check which tests failed on PR 55 in owner/repo and show the failure logs
- List the 10 most recent workflow runs for owner/repo
- Query PR 55 using gh api to get the title and state

# GitHub Skill

Use the `gh` CLI to interact with GitHub. Always specify `--repo owner/repo` when not in a git directory, or use URLs directly.

## Pull Requests

Check CI status on a PR:
```bash
gh pr checks 55 --repo owner/repo
```

List recent workflow runs:
```bash
gh run list --repo owner/repo --limit 10
```

View a run and see which steps failed:
```bash
gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo
```

View logs for failed steps only:
```bash
gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo --log-failed
```

### Debugging a CI Failure

Follow this sequence to investigate a failing CI run:

1. **Check PR status** — identify which checks are failing:
   ```bash
   gh pr checks 55 --repo owner/repo
   ```
2. **List recent runs** — find the relevant run ID:
   ```bash
   gh run list --repo owner/repo --limit 10
   ```
3. **View the failed run** — see which jobs and steps failed:
   ```bash
   gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo
   ```
4. **Fetch failure logs** — get the detailed output for failed steps:
   ```bash
   gh run view <run-id> --repo owner/repo --log-failed
   ```

## API for Advanced Queries

The `gh api` command is useful for accessing data not available through other subcommands.

Get PR with specific fields:
```bash
gh api repos/owner/repo/pulls/55 --jq '.title, .state, .user.login'
```

## JSON Output

Most commands support `--json` for structured output. You can use `--jq` to filter:

```bash
gh issue list --repo owner/repo --json number,title --jq '.[] | "\(.number): \(.title)"'
```
