## What it does

The skill explains how to use DigitalOcean Container Registry for private images: create a registry in the target region, authenticate build systems, and let App Platform or Kubernetes pull from it. It also covers official and marketplace images for new Droplets.

For custom images, it describes uploading an image that meets DigitalOcean requirements and using it as the base for Droplets. Snapshots provide versioned states for reuse and rollback. A build system must authenticate before it can push an image to the registry.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill digitalocean-containers-images -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/digitalocean-containers-images/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/digitalocean-containers-images/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill digitalocean-containers-images -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/digitalocean-containers-images/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill digitalocean-containers-images -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/digitalocean-containers-images/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills digitalocean-containers-images
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/digitalocean-containers-images/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill digitalocean-containers-images -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/platforms/deployment/digitalocean-containers-images
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/digitalocean-containers-images/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill digitalocean-containers-images -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/platforms/deployment/digitalocean-containers-images/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a private DigitalOcean Container Registry
- configure image pushes from a build system
- let App Platform or Kubernetes pull private images
- boot a Droplet from a custom image
- version Droplet states with snapshots

## Example prompts
- Set up a private DigitalOcean Container Registry for this project’s images.
- Explain how to push a container image and let Kubernetes pull it.
- Show me how to upload a custom image and create a Droplet from it.

## Overview

DigitalOcean provides a private Container Registry plus tools for managing Droplet images and snapshots.

## Container Registry

Use Container Registry to store private container images.

- Create a registry in the target region.
- Authenticate build systems to push images.
- Configure App Platform or Kubernetes to pull from the registry.

## Containers and Images

Use preconfigured images to create Droplets quickly.

- Select official or marketplace images when creating Droplets.
- Use snapshots to capture a configured Droplet as a reusable image.

## Custom Images

Use custom images to boot Droplets with preinstalled stacks.

- Upload a custom image that meets DigitalOcean requirements.
- Use the custom image as the base for new Droplets.

## Image Lifecycle Practices

- Standardize base images for consistency.
- Use snapshots to version and roll back Droplet states.
- Store container images in the registry alongside source commits.

## Complementary Skills

When using this skill, consider these related skills (if deployed):

- **digitalocean-compute**: Droplets, App Platform, and Kubernetes compute selection.
- **digitalocean-storage**: Snapshots and backups.
- **docker**: Container build and runtime patterns.

*Note: Complementary skills are optional. This skill is fully functional without them.*
