## What it does

The skill treats your build and the PostHog symbol sets as one pipeline: build config, generated symbol artifacts, the uploaded symbol set, and the captured frame. It covers JavaScript and TypeScript on the web, React Native with Hermes, Android via Proguard and R8, and iOS or macOS with dSYM. Looking up a symbol set in PostHog works the same way on every platform; build-tool details sit in per-platform references.

Start by finding which PostHog package uploads the symbols (`@posthog/rollup-plugin`, `@posthog/webpack-plugin`, `@posthog/nextjs-config`, `@posthog/nuxt`, or `posthog-cli` directly) and what it processes. Then run the production build and inspect the emitted artifacts on disk. Next, look up the symbol set whose `ref` matches the frame's `chunk_id` and download it. What you get is a compressed container, not JSON, so unpack it with `posthog-cli symbol-sets extract`.

Keeping artifacts on disk after upload makes debugging easier — with the Vite plugin that means `deleteAfterUpload: false`. If the local artifacts are already empty, the build is the thing to fix, not the upload. A `last_used` timestamp only says PostHog found and loaded the set; it does not mean the frame resolved. A “Token not found” error usually means the deployed binary changed after upload, or the captured position is wrong.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PostHog/skills diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PostHog/skills --path skills/omnibus/diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PostHog/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/omnibus/diagnosing-stacktrace-symbolication/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find why frames stay minified after source maps are uploaded
- check whether a frame's `chunk_id` matches the symbol set `ref`
- work through a “Token not found” symbolication error
- tell empty bundler mappings apart from a failed upload
- unpack a downloaded symbol container and compare it with the local artifact

## Example prompts
- Frames in PostHog Error Tracking are still minified, help me debug the symbolication
- I downloaded a symbol set, extract it with `posthog-cli symbol-sets extract` and compare it to the local source maps
- The error says “Token not found”, check the frame's `chunk_id` against the symbol set `ref`

  Help users debug PostHog Error Tracking stack-trace symbolication for any supported platform — JavaScript/TypeScript
  web, React Native (Hermes), Android (Proguard / R8), or iOS / macOS (dSYM). The PostHog symbol-set lookup flow is
  universal across platforms; build-tool and artifact details live in per-platform references (JavaScript is fleshed
  out, others come as we encounter them). Use when stack frames stay minified or obfuscated after symbols are
  uploaded, PostHog symbol sets show last_used but frames are not readable, chunk IDs or dSYM UUIDs do not match,
  "Token not found" appears, uploaded source maps / dSYMs / Proguard mappings look empty, or bundler /
  symbol-upload configuration needs troubleshooting.

# Diagnosing stack-trace symbolication

Symbolication is the cross-platform name for what JavaScript source-map lookup, Hermes function-offset resolution,
Proguard / R8 demangling, and dSYM address-to-line lookup all do — turn a minified or obfuscated frame back into a
readable file, function, and line.

Work through the user's build and PostHog symbol sets as one pipeline: build config -> generated symbol artifacts
(JavaScript source maps, Hermes maps, Proguard mappings, or dSYM bundles) -> uploaded symbol set in PostHog ->
captured error frame. Most failures become obvious once those four pieces are checked in order.
