# diagnose-fix-loop

A skill that keeps the agent looping: diagnose, make one scoped fix, verify with the same signal, diagnose again. It targets causes, not symptoms.

## What it does

This skill drives a full improvement loop instead of a single debugging pass. You start by naming the target outcome: a symptom, a failing test, a regression, a performance goal. Then a `$diagnose` pass collects causal evidence and records the exact validation signal to rerun later. Fixes only begin on Proven or Supported evidence.

The fix plan gets ranked, and only the top item is implemented — the smallest credible one. The original signal is rerun, followed by focused regression checks. Then `$diagnose` runs again on the new state, reading evidence rather than the intent behind the change. It looks for the original symptom still failing, a nearby fault, a regression the fix introduced, or a sharper next bottleneck. Each iteration should have a tighter target than the last.

One catch: the skill does not install dependencies for you. If `$diagnose` is missing, it stops before touching anything and asks you to run `npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose` first. A short log tracks iteration number, evidence, chosen fix, and validation result. If two iterations bring no measurable improvement, implementation pauses and the feedback loop itself gets re-diagnosed. Other stop rules cover blocked work: production access or credentials needed, a read-only diagnosis request, or a clean validation pass with no credible fault left.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose-fix-loop -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/diagnose-fix-loop/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/diagnose-fix-loop/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose-fix-loop -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/diagnose-fix-loop/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose-fix-loop -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/diagnose-fix-loop/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install LegendApp/legend-skills diagnose-fix-loop
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/diagnose-fix-loop/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose-fix-loop -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/LegendApp/legend-skills --path diagnose-fix-loop
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/diagnose-fix-loop/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose-fix-loop -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/LegendApp/legend-skills/tree/HEAD/diagnose-fix-loop/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find why a test fails and fix the cause rather than the symptom
- work through a performance regression one verified fix at a time
- revert a failed experiment instead of counting it as progress
- tell an introduced regression apart from a nearby remaining fault
- stop once the remaining improvements turn cosmetic or speculative

## Example prompts
- run diagnose-fix-loop: the checkout test fails on an empty cart
- use diagnose-fix-loop on the regression in the orders list
- diagnose-fix-loop: the page is slow on first render, find the cause and fix it

# Diagnose Fix Loop

Use this skill to drive a complete improvement loop, not a single debugging pass.

Before starting, load and follow `$diagnose`. Treat `$diagnose` as the evidence engine for each pass; this skill only adds the outer loop that plans, implements, re-runs diagnosis, and decides whether to continue.

Explicit invocation opts in to `$diagnose` and authorizes scoped local fixes and verification. This skill owns implementation once evidence supports a credible cause and fix.

Selected installs do not install dependencies automatically. If `$diagnose` is not installed or available, stop before making changes. Tell the user to install it with:

```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose
```

Then ask them to retry after installation.

## Loop

1. State the target outcome.
   Anchor the loop to the user's symptom, performance goal, failing test, UX defect, regression, or code quality concern. If the user gave no concrete anchor, create the fastest observable feedback loop first.

2. Run a `$diagnose` pass.
   Record the causal evidence and exact validation signal to rerun after the fix. Proceed on **Proven** or **Supported** evidence that justifies a scoped fix. If evidence remains **Incomplete**, continue useful available probes; stop when unavailable evidence prevents a credible fix, and report the gap.
   If the user asked for delegation, use it only for bounded evidence collection inside this pass; keep bottleneck ranking, fix selection, code edits, and final interpretation in the main loop.

3. Make a ranked fix plan.
   Prefer one smallest credible fix at a time. The plan must include:
   - what evidence supports the change
   - what file or boundary will change
   - what validation should improve
   - what would make the plan wrong

4. Implement only the top plan item.
   Keep the edit scoped to the supported causal boundary. Avoid stacking speculative cleanup, broad refactors, or adjacent improvements unless the diagnosis showed they are part of the same fault.

5. Verify with the original signal.
