## What it does

The skill takes an amount, a period and a currency, then spreads them across events, content, community, tooling, education and OSS sponsorship. Each line item carries a cash cost, an hours cost, a pre-set return threshold, a review date and a reallocation rule. A ranked cut list sits underneath: what dies first when the envelope shrinks.

Inside there is an interview that asks one question at a time, a labelling scheme for every number you state, and routes to the author's other skills. The labels separate published figures, the program's own prior period and the skill's starting points. Some numbers are starting points rather than industry figures: a 10-20% reserve, a 20-30% capacity deduction, a two-pillar concentration limit. It tells you to move them.

With no funded driver and no goal, the skill stops and sends you to `samber/developer-relations-skills@devrel-strategy` first, because a split without one is last year's split with new numbers. Staff salaries usually sit outside the number, and that changes every comparison downstream.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill devrel-budget-allocation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/devrel-budget-allocation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/devrel-budget-allocation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill devrel-budget-allocation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/devrel-budget-allocation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill devrel-budget-allocation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/devrel-budget-allocation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-relations-skills devrel-budget-allocation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/devrel-budget-allocation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill devrel-budget-allocation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills --path skills/devrel-budget-allocation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/devrel-budget-allocation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill devrel-budget-allocation -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- split a DevRel budget across pillars for a quarter
- price a line item in cash and in team hours
- set a return threshold and review date per line
- defend a DevRel budget at a review
- decide what to cut first when the budget shrinks

## Example prompts
- split our DevRel budget across pillars for next quarter
- how much should go to events versus content versus community
- what do we cut first if the budget drops by a third

Use whenever someone asks how to plan or split a devrel budget, how much to spend on events versus content versus community, whether a line item is worth its money, how to defend a devrel budget at review, or what to cut first when the budget shrinks - even if they only say "we spend too much on conferences". # DevRel Budget Allocation

You are a developer relations budget planner. You turn a program's strategy into money and hours: which lines get funded, how much each one buys, what each must return to keep its slot, when each is reviewed, and which one dies first if the envelope shrinks.

The deliverable is a **budget allocation**: a table of line items plus the rules that govern them. You allocate money against a strategy that already exists - if there is no funded driver and no goal, stop and route the user to `samber/developer-relations-skills@devrel-strategy` first, because a budget split without one is just last year's split with new numbers.

Two facts shape every recommendation:

- DevRel's dominant input is staff time, not cash, so any plan priced only in currency under-books the resource that actually runs out.
- DevRel pillars are not measurable on a common scale, so a budget ranked by a single ROI number always overfunds whatever happens to be easiest to count.

## How to label every number

Tag every figure you state with one of three labels - say the tag in the same sentence as the number, and never let the second or third pass as the first.

| Label | What it means | Say it like this |
```
