# semantic-versioning

A skill that bumps versions by SemVer rules and builds a changelog from commit history. Useful once releases need to run themselves.

## What it does

The skill lays out the MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH format with prerelease and build metadata, and which part to raise for which change. Then it maps conventional commit types onto that: `feat:` means MINOR, `fix:` means PATCH, `BREAKING CHANGE:` or `feat!` means MAJOR. Types like `test` and `chore` trigger no release.

What you get is configs and commands for specific tools. For `semantic-release` there is a `.releaserc.json` with `@semantic-release/commit-analyzer`, `@semantic-release/changelog` and `@semantic-release/git`, plus a `release.config.js` variant where `beta` and `alpha` branches act as prereleases. A GitHub Actions workflow is included, with `fetch-depth: 0` and `persist-credentials: false`. For `standard-version` you get `.versionrc.json` and a set of npm scripts; for changelogs, `conventional-changelog` and `git-cliff` with `cliff.toml`.

You need a git repository with commit history and Node.js, since nearly every tool here installs through npm. Conventional commits are listed as recommended rather than required — without them the automatic type analysis has nothing to read, so you set the bump yourself with a flag such as `--release-as`. Run `--dry-run` first: it prints what the tool intends to do and writes nothing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill semantic-versioning -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/semantic-versioning/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/semantic-versioning/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill semantic-versioning -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/semantic-versioning/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill semantic-versioning -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/semantic-versioning/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills semantic-versioning
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/semantic-versioning/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill semantic-versioning -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path devops/release/semantic-versioning
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/semantic-versioning/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill semantic-versioning -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/devops/release/semantic-versioning/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide whether a batch of changes is a MAJOR, MINOR or PATCH bump
- generate a CHANGELOG from commit messages without editing it by hand
- set up an automatic release on every push to main
- ship an alpha or beta prerelease from its own branch
- preview the next release without committing or tagging

## Example prompts
- Set up semantic-release in this repo: main branch, CHANGELOG.md updated automatically
- Add npm scripts for standard-version: regular release, minor, major and dry-run
- Generate CHANGELOG.md with git-cliff, grouped by commit type

# Semantic Versioning

Automate version management and changelog generation following SemVer principles.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Implementing version numbering standards
- Automating release versioning
- Generating changelogs automatically
- Setting up release pipelines
- Managing package versions

## Prerequisites

- Git repository with commit history
- Node.js (for most tools)
- Conventional commits (recommended)

## Semantic Versioning Basics

### Version Format

```
MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH[-PRERELEASE][+BUILD]
Examples:
1.0.0
2.1.3
1.0.0-alpha.1
1.0.0-beta.2+build.123
```

### Version Components

| Component | When to Increment |
|-----------|-------------------|
| MAJOR | Breaking changes (incompatible API changes) |
| MINOR | New features (backward compatible) |
| PATCH | Bug fixes (backward compatible) |
| PRERELEASE | Pre-release versions (alpha, beta, rc) |
| BUILD | Build metadata (ignored in precedence) |

### Version Precedence

```
1.0.0-alpha < 1.0.0-alpha.1 < 1.0.0-alpha.beta
< 1.0.0-beta < 1.0.0-beta.2 < 1.0.0-beta.11
< 1.0.0-rc.1 < 1.0.0 < 2.0.0
```

## Conventional Commits to Version

```yaml
Commit Type → Version Bump:
  feat:     → MINOR
  fix:      → PATCH
  docs:     → PATCH (or no release)
  style:    → PATCH (or no release)
  refactor: → PATCH
  perf:     → PATCH
  test:     → No release
  chore:    → No release
  BREAKING CHANGE: → MAJOR
  feat!:   → MAJOR
  fix!:    → MAJOR
```

## semantic-release

### Installation

```bash
npm install --save-dev semantic-release \
  @semantic-release/changelog \
  @semantic-release/git
```

### Configuration

```json
// .releaserc.json
{
  "branches": ["main"],
  "plugins": [
    "@semantic-release/commit-analyzer",
    "@semantic-release/release-notes-generator",
    ["@semantic-release/changelog", {
