# mysql

A skill that walks your agent through MySQL and MariaDB work: install, InnoDB tuning, backups, source-replica replication. Useful when the agent touches a live database.

## What it does

The skill hands the agent ready commands and configs for MySQL and MariaDB. It covers install on `apt` or `dnf`, `mysql_secure_installation`, creating a database and an application user with scoped grants, a CLI reference, InnoDB tuning in `mysqld.cnf`, backups with `mysqldump` and Percona XtraBackup, replication setup, and monitoring queries.

You need a Linux server on Debian/Ubuntu or RHEL, or Docker, plus root or sudo to install packages and basic SQL familiarity. No sudo means no server install, so on a managed host with locked-down rights the skill is only good for client-side work and queries.

Config lives in `/etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld.cnf`, or `/etc/my.cnf` on RHEL. The sample `innodb_buffer_pool_size` is 4G, a starting point for a dedicated box rather than a universal value. Replication needs `server-id` and `log_bin` enabled.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill mysql -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/mysql/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/mysql/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill mysql -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/mysql/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill mysql -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/mysql/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills mysql
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/mysql/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill mysql -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/databases/mysql
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/mysql/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill mysql -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- install MySQL 8 on Debian or RHEL and close the default holes
- create a database and an app user with limited grants
- tune InnoDB for transactional load
- take a logical backup of one database or all of them
- set up source-replica replication for read scaling

## Example prompts
- install MySQL 8 on this server and run mysql_secure_installation
- create the mydb database and a myapp user with grants on it only
- set this server up as a replica and show me SHOW REPLICA STATUS

# MySQL / MariaDB

Administer, optimize, and secure MySQL and MariaDB databases in development and production environments.

## When to Use

- You need a mature, widely supported relational database.
- Your stack depends on MySQL-specific features or compatibility (WordPress, Magento, many PHP frameworks).
- You are setting up source-replica replication for read scaling.
- You want to tune InnoDB for high-throughput transactional workloads.

## Prerequisites

- Linux server (Debian/Ubuntu or RHEL-based) or Docker.
- Root or sudo access for package installation.
- Familiarity with SQL fundamentals.

## Installation and Setup

```bash
# Debian / Ubuntu — MySQL 8
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y mysql-server
# RHEL / Amazon Linux
sudo dnf install -y mysql-server
sudo systemctl enable --now mysqld
# Run the secure installation wizard
sudo mysql_secure_installation
# Prompts: set root password, remove anonymous users, disable remote root, remove test db
# Verify
mysql --version
sudo systemctl status mysql
```

## Initial User and Database Setup

```bash
sudo mysql -u root -p
```

```sql
-- Create a database
CREATE DATABASE mydb CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
-- Create an application user with strong auth
CREATE USER 'myapp'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'strong_password_here';
GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE ON mydb.* TO 'myapp'@'%';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
-- Verify
SHOW GRANTS FOR 'myapp'@'%';
```

## mysql CLI Reference

```bash
# Connect
mysql -u myapp -p -h 127.0.0.1 mydb
# Execute a single statement
mysql -u myapp -p -e "SELECT COUNT(*) FROM orders;" mydb
# Import a SQL file
mysql -u myapp -p mydb < schema.sql
# Export query results to CSV
mysql -u myapp -p -e "SELECT * FROM users" mydb \
  | tr '\t' ',' > users.csv
```

```
-- Inside the mysql shell
SHOW DATABASES;
USE mydb;
SHOW TABLES;
DESCRIBE users;
SHOW CREATE TABLE users\G
SHOW PROCESSLIST;
SHOW ENGINE INNODB STATUS\G
```

## Configuration Tuning

Edit `/etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld.cnf` (or `/etc/my.cnf` on RHEL).

```ini
[mysqld]
# -- Networking --
bind-address           = 0.0.0.0
max_connections        = 300
wait_timeout           = 600
interactive_timeout    = 600
# -- InnoDB (most impactful settings) --
innodb_buffer_pool_size   = 4G          # ~70% of RAM on a dedicated server
innodb_buffer_pool_instances = 4        # 1 per GB of pool (up to 64)
innodb_log_file_size      = 1G
innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 1      # 1 = ACID; 2 = faster, slight risk
innodb_flush_method       = O_DIRECT    # avoids double buffering on Linux
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 8c066894f9533164 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
