## What it does

Three branching models come with commands for each step: trunk-based development for short-lived branches, GitHub Flow for web apps, and GitFlow for versioned products on scheduled releases. You get the checkout, rebase, merge and cleanup lines rather than a description of them.

Commit conventions follow Conventional Commits, with types like `feat`, `fix`, `docs` and `refactor`, plus a message template wired up through `git config --global commit.template ~/.gitmessage`. The rest covers a pull request template, branch protection for `main` written as YAML, a `.github/CODEOWNERS` example, and hooks: a shell pre-commit script, Husky and lint-staged config in `package.json`, and commitlint setup.

You need Git installed, a host such as GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, and basic Git knowledge. The sample pre-commit hook calls `npm run lint` and `npm run test:unit`, so it fails on the first commit in a project without those scripts — worth checking `package.json` before copying it over.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill git-workflow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/git-workflow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill git-workflow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill git-workflow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills git-workflow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill git-workflow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path devops/release/git-workflow
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill git-workflow -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/devops/release/git-workflow/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a branching model that fits your release cadence
- protect main and require reviews before merge
- enforce one commit message format across the team
- write a pull request template with a checklist
- add a pre-commit hook that runs lint and tests

## Example prompts
- Set up GitFlow for a project with scheduled releases
- Write a pre-commit hook that runs lint and unit tests
- Draft branch protection rules for main and a CODEOWNERS file

# Git Workflow

Implement effective branching strategies and pull request workflows for team collaboration.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Establishing team Git workflows
- Implementing branching strategies
- Configuring pull request processes
- Setting up release management
- Improving code review practices

## Prerequisites

- Git installed
- Repository hosting (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket)
- Basic Git knowledge

## Branching Strategies

### Trunk-Based Development

Best for: Continuous deployment, small teams, mature CI/CD

```
main ─────●─────●─────●─────●─────●─────●─────●
          │     │     │     │     │     │
          └─●   └─●   └─●   └─●   └─●   └─●
         feature branches (short-lived)
```

```bash
# Create short-lived feature branch
git checkout main
git pull origin main
git checkout -b feature/add-login
# Work and commit frequently
git add .
git commit -m "feat: add login form"
# Keep branch updated
git fetch origin
git rebase origin/main
# Merge quickly (same day ideally)
git checkout main
git pull origin main
git merge feature/add-login
git push origin main
git branch -d feature/add-login
```

### GitHub Flow

Best for: Continuous delivery, web applications

```
main ─────●─────●───────────●─────────────●─────●
          │           ↑           ↑       ↑
          └───●───●───┘           │       │
              feature/login       │       │
                                  │       │
          └───●───●───●───●───────┘       │
              feature/dashboard           │
                                          │
          └───●─────────────────────────┘
              hotfix/security-patch
```

```bash
# Create feature branch from main
git checkout main
git pull origin main
git checkout -b feature/user-dashboard
# Push and create PR
git push -u origin feature/user-dashboard
