# feature-flags

A skill that walks your coding agent through feature flags: gradual rollout, A/B tests, kill switches. Useful when you want to ship code without shipping the feature.

## What it does

The skill covers five flag types: release, experiment, ops, permission and kill switch. Each one has its own job, from gating a new checkout flow to disabling a third-party integration in a hurry. The agent picks the right type for your case.

There are worked examples for LaunchDarkly and Unleash. LaunchDarkly gets Node.js and React SDK setups plus targeting rules by email, plan and rollout percentage. Unleash gets a `docker-compose.yml` with the server and Postgres, a Node.js client, and strategies like `gradualRolloutUserId` and `flexibleRollout`. If you would rather not use a vendor, there is a Django model for flags with percentage rollout via a hash of `flag_name:user_id`, and a Redis-backed variant.

LaunchDarkly needs an SDK key in an environment variable; Unleash needs a running server and an API token. Rollout percentages come from a hash, so the same user lands in the same bucket every time. Worth checking that your salt does not change mid-experiment, or people will jump between variants.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill feature-flags -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/feature-flags/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/feature-flags/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill feature-flags -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/feature-flags/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill feature-flags -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/feature-flags/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills feature-flags
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/feature-flags/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill feature-flags -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path devops/release/feature-flags
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/feature-flags/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill feature-flags -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/devops/release/feature-flags/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- show a new checkout flow to a slice of users
- test two button variants on live traffic
- turn off a third-party integration without a deploy
- gate premium features by plan
- move to trunk-based development without long-lived branches

## Example prompts
- Add a new-checkout feature flag with LaunchDarkly and enable it for the premium plan
- Set up a 25 percent gradual rollout in Unleash
- Create a kill switch for the payment provider integration

# Feature Flags

Control feature releases and enable progressive rollout with feature flag systems.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Implementing gradual feature rollouts
- Enabling trunk-based development
- Running A/B tests and experiments
- Managing feature lifecycles
- Implementing kill switches for production

## Prerequisites

- Application code access
- Feature flag service or self-hosted solution
- Basic understanding of deployment patterns

## Feature Flag Types

| Type | Purpose | Example |
|------|---------|---------|
| Release | Control feature visibility | New checkout flow |
| Experiment | A/B testing | Button color test |
| Ops | Runtime configuration | Rate limiting |
| Permission | User access control | Premium features |
| Kill Switch | Emergency disable | Third-party integration |

## LaunchDarkly

### SDK Setup (Node.js)

```javascript
const LaunchDarkly = require('launchdarkly-node-server-sdk');
const client = LaunchDarkly.init(process.env.LAUNCHDARKLY_SDK_KEY);
await client.waitForInitialization();
// Evaluate flag
const user = {
  key: 'user-123',
  email: 'user@example.com',
  custom: {
    plan: 'premium',
    company: 'acme'
  }
};
const showNewFeature = await client.variation('new-checkout', user, false);
if (showNewFeature) {
  // New feature code
} else {
  // Existing code
}
```

### React SDK

```javascript
import { withLDProvider, useFlags, useLDClient } from 'launchdarkly-react-client-sdk';
// Provider setup
export default withLDProvider({
  clientSideID: 'your-client-side-id',
  user: {
    key: 'user-123',
    email: 'user@example.com'
  }
})(App);
// Using flags in component
function FeatureComponent() {
  const { newCheckout, experimentVariant } = useFlags();
  const ldClient = useLDClient();
  // Track events
  const handleClick = () => {
    ldClient.track('checkout-started');
  };
  if (newCheckout) {
    return <NewCheckout onClick={handleClick} />;
  }
  return <OldCheckout onClick={handleClick} />;
}
```

### Targeting Rules

```yaml
# LaunchDarkly targeting configuration
flag: new-checkout
targeting:
  # Individual users
  targets:
    - variation: true
