## What it does

The skill walks through the whole secret lifecycle in AWS: creating a secret with `aws secretsmanager create-secret`, reading its value, updating it, deleting it with a recovery window and tagging. A separate section covers automatic rotation — enabling it with `rotate-secret`, checking status and forcing an immediate change.

It ships a Python Lambda example for custom database password rotation. The function runs four steps: generate a new value, apply it to the target database with `psycopg2`, test it, then mark the version current. You need AWS CLI v2, an IAM policy allowing `secretsmanager:*` and Python 3.9+ with `boto3`. Rotation also expects a Lambda execution role and network access to the target services.

That `secretsmanager:*` policy grants access to every secret in the account, so scope it down to the resources you actually use before handing it out. The skill fits teams moving hardcoded passwords and keys into managed storage, and those wiring secrets into ECS, EKS or Lambda workloads.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-secrets-manager -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-secrets-manager/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-secrets-manager/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-secrets-manager -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-secrets-manager/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-secrets-manager -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-secrets-manager/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills aws-secrets-manager
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-secrets-manager/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-secrets-manager -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path security/secrets/aws-secrets-manager
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-secrets-manager/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-secrets-manager -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/security/secrets/aws-secrets-manager/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a secret with a JSON structure and tags
- enable automatic rotation for an RDS password
- strip hardcoded keys out of config files
- inject secrets into ECS, EKS or Lambda workloads
- restore a deleted secret within the recovery window

## Example prompts
- create a secret myapp/production/database with postgres credentials
- enable rotation for this secret every 30 days with a Lambda function
- show the rotation status and last rotated date for the secret

# AWS Secrets Manager

Securely store, manage, and rotate secrets in AWS.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Storing database credentials, API keys, or tokens in AWS
- Implementing automatic credential rotation for RDS or other services
- Replacing hardcoded secrets in application code or config files
- Integrating secrets into ECS, EKS, or Lambda workloads
- Meeting compliance requirements for secret management and rotation

## Prerequisites

- AWS account with appropriate IAM permissions
- AWS CLI v2 installed and configured
- IAM policy allowing `secretsmanager:*` actions (or scoped permissions)
- For rotation: Lambda execution role and VPC access to target services
- Python 3.9+ with `boto3` for SDK examples

## Secret Creation and Management

```bash
# Create a secret with JSON structure
aws secretsmanager create-secret \
  --name myapp/production/database \
  --description "Production database credentials" \
  --secret-string '{"username":"dbadmin","password":"S3cur3P@ssw0rd!","engine":"postgres","host":"db.internal.example.com","port":5432,"dbname":"myapp"}' \
  --tags '[{"Key":"Environment","Value":"production"},{"Key":"Team","Value":"platform"}]'
# Create a secret with KMS encryption (custom key)
aws secretsmanager create-secret \
  --name myapp/production/api-key \
  --description "Third-party API key" \
  --secret-string "ak_live_xxxxxxxxxxxx" \
  --kms-key-id alias/secrets-key
# Create a binary secret (certificates, keys)
aws secretsmanager create-secret \
  --name myapp/production/tls-cert \
  --secret-binary fileb://server.pfx
# Get secret value
aws secretsmanager get-secret-value \
  --secret-id myapp/production/database \
  --query 'SecretString' --output text | jq .
# Get a specific version
aws secretsmanager get-secret-value \
  --secret-id myapp/production/database \
  --version-stage AWSPREVIOUS
# Update secret value
aws secretsmanager put-secret-value \
  --secret-id myapp/production/database \
  --secret-string '{"username":"dbadmin","password":"N3wS3cur3P@ss!","engine":"postgres","host":"db.internal.example.com","port":5432,"dbname":"myapp"}'
# List all secrets
