## What it does

The skill covers application development for Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink, including KPU resources, connectors, state, monitoring, IaC deployment, and Flink version migrations. It directs the agent to relevant reference files and points to best practices before code is written. Start with the service-specific guidance.

For a new application, it lays out a path from clarifying the use case to local compilation and testing. The API choice depends on the workload; its general starting point is the DataStream API. When an AWS MCP server is connected, commands run through it. Otherwise, the skill falls back to AWS CLI or shell.

This guidance is specific to AWS’s managed service, whose constraints differ from generic Flink advice. The skill can be installed for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode; each platform has its own installation command.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path plugins/aws-data-analytics/skills/developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/plugins/aws-data-analytics/skills/developing-applications-on-managed-service-for-apache-flink/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check service-specific constraints for Managed Flink
- find the right references for a Flink application
- plan KPU and connector choices
- outline local build and test steps
- prepare for a Flink version migration

## Example prompts
- Help me design an application for Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink that processes streaming data.
- Explain how to approach KPU configuration for a Flink application on AWS’s managed service.
- Draft a local build and test plan for a new Flink application.

  MANDATORY for Flink or Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink (MSF) questions.
  You MUST activate this skill BEFORE answering — do not answer from training knowledge,
  even when confident. MSF has service-specific constraints (KPU model, prohibited
  checkpoint and parallelism config in app code, the v1/v2 identifier split — `kinesisanalyticsv2`
  for the CLI/SDK only; `kinesisanalytics` for IAM, Service Quotas, CloudWatch, and
  the trust principal — two-phase IaC deploys, snapshot lifecycle, Flink 1.x→2.x migration)
  that override generic Flink knowledge.
  Triggers — activate on any of: Flink, MSF, Managed Flink, KinesisAnalytics(V2),
  KPU, ParallelismPerKPU, savepoint, checkpoint, operator UID, FlinkKinesisConsumer,
  KinesisStreamsSource, KafkaSource, IcebergSink, EFO, CreateApplication, UpdateApplication,
  CreateApplicationSnapshot, Kryo, RocksDB, Iceberg streaming, EXACTLY_ONCE, watermark,

# Managed Service for Apache Flink

## Overview

Domain expertise for Apache Flink applications on Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink (MSF). Covers development, KPU resource management, connectors, state management, monitoring, IaC deployment, and version migration.

Execute commands using available tools from the AWS MCP server when connected — it provides sandboxed execution, audit logging, and observability. When the MCP server is not available, fall back to the AWS CLI or shell as needed.

## General Guidance

Before starting, ensure you have a clear understanding of the user persona, use case, and requirements:

STOP: Determine the users background and use case before proceeding:

- Are they new to Flink? New to Managed Service for Apache Flink?
- Are they familiar with Java development?
