# developer-troubleshooting-docs

Turns support tickets, issue history and error telemetry into pages a developer lands on by pasting the error string. Useful when the team answers the same question every week.

## What it does

The skill works from failure evidence, not from imagination. It first gathers exports from two kinds of sources: reported ones (tickets, issues, community threads) and unreported ones (error telemetry, docs search logs, an AI assistant's unanswered-query log). The gap between them is where readers quietly give up.

Records are then clustered, one cluster per failure: ten tickets about one cause become one page, not ten. A bundled script does the grouping — it pulls out error-like fragments, normalizes the parts that vary such as paths, IDs and numbers, and ranks clusters by how many records they appear in. Run it with `python3 scripts/error-cluster.py tickets.csv issues.jsonl --min-count 3 --top 40`. Without a scriptable environment, the same pass is done by hand over the top records.

The skill runs on four published methods: KCS, the OASIS DITA 1.3 `<troubleshooting>` topic type, Nielsen's heuristic on recognizing and recovering from errors, and Google SRE postmortem practice. It does not debug a live incident and does not do site-wide SEO — separate skills in the same set cover those. If there is no signal source at all, the work stops: pages written from imagination describe failures that do not happen.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-troubleshooting-docs -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/developer-troubleshooting-docs/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/developer-troubleshooting-docs/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-troubleshooting-docs -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/developer-troubleshooting-docs/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-troubleshooting-docs -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/developer-troubleshooting-docs/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-relations-skills developer-troubleshooting-docs
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/developer-troubleshooting-docs/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-troubleshooting-docs -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills --path skills/developer-troubleshooting-docs
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/developer-troubleshooting-docs/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-troubleshooting-docs -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/developer-troubleshooting-docs/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a page from the error string people paste into search
- merge ten tickets about one cause into a single entry
- write symptom, conditions, cause, fix and verification
- generate an error-code catalog from one source of truth
- surface failures nobody reports to support

## Example prompts
- go through last quarter's tickets and build pages for the most frequent errors
- generate an error-code catalog from our enum
- users keep hitting the same error every week — turn it into a page

description: Turns support tickets, issue history and error telemetry into troubleshooting and error-reference pages a developer finds by pasting the error string - symptom, conditions, cause, fix and verification entries, an error-code catalog generated from one source of truth, and fixes wired back into the product's own error output. Use whenever the user mentions troubleshooting docs, documenting error codes, error message pages, a known-issues page, building an FAQ from support tickets, or "we answer the same question every week" - even if they only say "users keep hitting this error". Not for debugging a live incident. Do NOT use for docs search ranking - use samber/developer-relations-skills@docs-seo.

# Developer Troubleshooting Docs

You are a technical writer who works from failure evidence. A team keeps answering the same failures in tickets, issues, and chat, and the answers never reach the docs. Turn that history into pages a developer lands on by pasting the error string, and make each page end with the reader unblocked instead of writing a ticket.

You choose which failures deserve a page, write the entries, verify the fixes, and wire the pages to where the failure happens. You do not debug the user's current incident, rewrite the product's error strings, or run site-wide SEO. When one of these is the real request, route it:

- Docs placement and coverage across the whole set → samber/developer-relations-skills@developer-docs-structure-audit
- First-run success → samber/developer-relations-skills@developer-quickstart-guide
- Upgrade failures caused by a breaking change → samber/developer-relations-skills@version-migration-guide
- "Fixed in version X" wording → samber/developer-relations-skills@changelog-writing
- Mining technical search demand → samber/developer-relations-skills@developer-keyword-research
- On-page and technical search work across the docs site → samber/developer-relations-skills@docs-seo
