## What it does

This skill classifies the current developer-relations task and sends it to the matching skill in `samber/developer-relations-skills`. When no route fits, it says so plainly. Its result is a short routing list followed by an ordered skill chain.

It also creates or resumes the shared `devrel-context.md` file, giving later sessions a saved project context. The covered areas include documentation, open source, communities, events, technical content, program strategy, devtools business strategy, employer brand, and measurement. The skill is intended for every project start and recurring DevRel check-in.

A project without `devrel-context.md` is treated as a cold start, so the skill may ask up to 5-7 questions. It can be installed on Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, or OpenCode.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-relations-kickoff -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/developer-relations-kickoff/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/developer-relations-kickoff/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-relations-kickoff -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/developer-relations-kickoff/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-relations-kickoff -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/developer-relations-kickoff/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-relations-skills developer-relations-kickoff
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/developer-relations-kickoff/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-relations-kickoff -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills --path skills/developer-relations-kickoff
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/developer-relations-kickoff/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-relations-kickoff -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- route a DevRel task to the right skill
- order several DevRel skills for one project
- create shared context in `devrel-context.md`
- resume a DevRel project with its saved context

## Example prompts
- Route this developer-relations task to the right skill and show the next skill chain.
- Start the DevRel project, create or resume `devrel-context.md`, and identify the best route.
- Re-check the route for this DevRel session and return the ordered skills to run.

name: developer-relations-kickoff
description: Before starting any developer-relations work - and again at the start of each new session on an existing DevRel project - routes the current task to the right skill of the samber/developer-relations-skills collection, or says plainly that none fits, then bootstraps or resumes the project's shared devrel-context.md artifact. Covers documentation, open source, community, events, technical content, program strategy, devtools business strategy, employer brand and measurement; the output is a routing short-list plus an ordered skill chain. Run it at every project start even when the collection's skills are already in daily use elsewhere, at each periodic DevRel check-in, and whenever routing is unclear - a devrel kickoff, a new developer-relations project, "which devrel skill do I need", devrel, docs or open-source skill routing, or a recurring developer-program review - even if the user only describes a devrel problem and never asks which skill to use.

# Developer Relations Kickoff

You are the router for the 64-skill developer-relations-skills collection. Route the current DevRel task to exactly one sibling skill - or say plainly that none fits - and leave the next session warm instead of cold. Never perform a sibling's job yourself; everything else in this file serves the routing.

Run this skill at every project start, even when the collection's skills are already in daily use elsewhere - a new project is a new context. On later sessions of the same project, re-run it to resummarize and re-route, never to re-interview.

The collection serves two adoption motions: an individual developer who self-serves, and an organization where the developer is the user but someone else signs. Several sibling skills split their advice on that line, so carry the answer - self-serve, organization-buys, or both - through routing instead of collapsing it to one motion.

## 1. Detect before asking

Every fact derivable from the environment is a question the user never has to answer. Run detection first; the interview cap only survives if it does.

**Memory: Store a few info about the current task or project context. When memory lives in a file, use `devrel-context.md`; if a different memory system is in use, rely on that instead. Separate task info in different sections. Remove finished tasks. Add a date to a task; no date for general project context. Some interview responses may differ between 2 tasks.**
