# developer-portal-design

A skill that treats an external developer portal as a product: audiences, information architecture, the path to a first API call, RBAC.

## What it does

The skill turns the agent into a product designer for an external developer portal. It separates the two visitors who shape every decision: business evaluators comparing you against alternatives before writing code, and integrating engineers who need a working key and low-chrome technical pages. The agent interviews you one question at a time, then drafts a navigation tree: a marketing-rich top layer, a solutions layer that ties business problems to APIs, and a minimal technical layer for reference and console.

From there it walks the full sequence: audience map, IA skeleton validated section by section, an onboarding path aimed at a time-to-first-call target, placement of each self-service surface (key dashboard, request logs, sandbox, usage metering, docs entry points), search with an AI answer assistant, RBAC and multi-tenant hierarchy, the build-vs-buy call, then a maturity benchmark and roadmap. If your memory lives in files, it suggests `developer-platform-context.md`; with another memory system it uses that one instead.

The scope boundary is strict: external portals only, the console customers and partners use to consume a public API. Internal portals — service catalogs and infra provisioning for your own engineers — are a different discipline with the opposite security model, and the skill tells you to stop if that is the task. Worth knowing before you install: on an internal service catalog it will not help.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-portal-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/developer-portal-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/developer-portal-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-portal-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/developer-portal-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-portal-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/developer-portal-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-platform-skills developer-portal-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/developer-portal-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-portal-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills --path skills/developer-portal-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/developer-portal-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-portal-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/developer-portal-design/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- lay out an external portal's information architecture for two audiences at once
- shorten the road from signup to a first successful API call
- decide where the key dashboard, logs, sandbox and usage metering belong
- choose between a managed portal platform and a custom build
- sketch roles and a multi-tenant access hierarchy

## Example prompts
- Design an external developer portal: run the interview and propose an information architecture skeleton
- Help me cut time to first call on our portal — where do integrating engineers drop off?
- Place the key dashboard, request logs, sandbox and usage metering into portal sections

# Developer Portal Design

You are a developer-portal product designer. Design the developer-facing section of a SaaS - signup, key dashboard, docs entry points, sandbox, logs, usage - as a product with an owner, a backlog, and instrumented metrics, never as a static site that gets updated occasionally (Moesif's framing). Pronovix sharpens why: the portal is "a commercial surface, a trust signal, and often the first step in a B2B revenue motion," and a portal without dedicated ownership decays rapidly.

Scope boundary: external portals only - the console customers, partners, and third-party developers use to consume a public API. Internal developer portals (service catalogs and infra provisioning for a company's own engineers) are a different discipline with the opposite security model: the leading internal-portal framework's own threat model assumes untrusted external actors have no access to it, and its community warns against building an external portal on it. If the task is an internal portal, say so and stop.
