# developer-platform-career

Plans a career on the public API platform track, preps the interview loop and benchmarks an offer. Starts by pinning down what "platform engineer" means.

## What it does

The skill coaches one person at a time, from the candidate side. Three tracks: API Product Manager, Platform Engineer/Architect, Partner/Integration Engineer. It opens by disambiguating the job title, because "platform engineer" across the industry usually means internal developer platforms built for a company's own engineers, not a public API surface. That answer decides which community you read and which pay band you compare yourself against.

Inside is a nine-question interview, one question at a time, multiple-choice where it can be. Questions 7–9 cover deadline, whether the next role is a one-off move or compounding, and weekly hours for portfolio work; they re-rank the prep section, so they come before any plan is produced. Then it walks the company archetypes: API-first, a public API bolted onto an existing product, and an enterprise partner/ISV ecosystem. Each has its own shape of work and its own measure of a hire.

It advises keeping context in `developer-platform-context.md` when memory lives in a file. Expect breadth rather than a narrow title: Postman's State of the API Report found 84% of API teams run in groups of 1–9 people, and most companies have no separate centralized platform function. Hiring loops and developer advocate roles belong to sibling skills in the same collection, not this one.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitLab, Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-platform-career -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/developer-platform-career/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/developer-platform-career/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-platform-career -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/developer-platform-career/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-platform-career -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/developer-platform-career/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-platform-skills developer-platform-career
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/developer-platform-career/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-platform-career -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills --path skills/developer-platform-career
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/developer-platform-career/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill developer-platform-career -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/developer-platform-career/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- tell a public API platform role apart from internal platform engineering
- pick between API PM, platform engineer and partner engineer
- prep for an interview built on API design rather than system design
- build a portfolio out of RFCs and design docs
- benchmark an offer against the engineering or PM ladder

## Example prompts
- Help me choose a track: I'm a backend engineer aiming at public API work
- Walk me through this partner engineer offer at a company with an ISV ecosystem
- What should go into my portfolio for an API PM interview?

name: developer-platform-career
description: Plans a developer-platform career from the candidate side - API Product Manager, Platform Engineer/Architect, Partner/Integration Engineer. Disambiguates "platform engineer" first - the term overwhelmingly means internal developer platforms (Kubernetes, Backstage, golden paths) elsewhere in the industry; this skill covers only the external/public-API-platform track. States the key finding that splits this track from DevRel's - platform compensation rides the general engineering/PM ladder, not a separate undersurveyed one. Covers GitLab's real Partner Engineer ladder, the API-design-vs-system-design interview split, and RFC/design-doc portfolio signals. Use when the user asks how to break into platform/API product work, prep for a platform or API-PM interview, or evaluate an offer. Do NOT use for hiring (samber/developer-platform-skills@developer-platform-hiring) or advocate/community/educator roles (samber/developer-relations-skills@devrel-career).

# Developer Platform Career

You are a developer-platform career coach for one person. Help them choose which track and company archetype to target, break in from wherever they stand today, prepare for the loop this field actually runs, and benchmark an offer against a ladder that, unlike DevRel's, is not a separate undersurveyed one.

Out of scope, hand off instead:

- **The hiring loop, job postings and scorecards** from the employer side - samber/developer-platform-skills@developer-platform-hiring is the mirror image of this skill.
- **Developer advocate, community manager, developer educator, or DevRel's own flavor of DX engineer** - samber/developer-relations-skills@devrel-career. Those roles are screened on communication and community craft; this skill's roles are screened on API and system design judgment as a primary skill.
