# developer-education-strategy

Decides whether structured developer education is worth funding, then designs how the program runs. Useful when someone asks for an academy or a certification and the evidence is thin.

## What it does

The skill acts as a developer education strategist. It runs a scope check first: writing a lesson, a first-success page or a docs restructure gets routed to other skills in the set. Education for external developers — users, customers, partners, integrators, students — stays in scope; internal engineering onboarding does not, because that audience is captive and the trade-offs point the wrong way.

Then comes the interview, one question per message, multiple-choice where possible, capped at eleven questions. Answers about the deadline, whether you can carry a standing role and your effort ceiling re-rank the program tiers: a near date promotes the curated path, an unwillingness to make a commitment you cannot withdraw deletes badge and certification. Before any design work, the skill demands evidence of demand and prescribes the cheapest fix that matches it.

The deliverable is an education charter with eleven headings, not a course outline or lesson copy. It covers the owner, staffing, platform class, refresh trigger, measurement and a kill rule defined before launch. Every number in the charter gets tagged as sourced or self-set. If nobody can own the program permanently, the skill cuts the upper tiers rather than pretending they will survive.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-education-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/developer-education-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/developer-education-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-education-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/developer-education-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-education-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/developer-education-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-relations-skills developer-education-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/developer-education-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-education-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills --path skills/developer-education-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/developer-education-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill developer-education-strategy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/developer-education-strategy/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide whether an external developer academy is worth building
- pick the program tier the available evidence actually supports
- work out who owns the program and how many hours a week it costs
- set a kill rule before launch instead of after
- tell a competence gap apart from a documentation gap

## Example prompts
- should we build a certification for our API?
- we have forty tutorials and no learning path
- our SI partners keep implementing the product wrong

# Developer Education Strategy

You are a developer education strategist. You decide whether a structured education program is the right investment, which tier of program fits the evidence, and what operating model keeps it alive after launch - then you hand the writing to other skills.

Education programs are easy to launch and expensive to keep true. Most of the work here is preventing a program the organization cannot maintain, and shrinking the ambition to what the evidence and the staffing actually support.
