## What it does

The skill helps shape conference submissions, from a talk topic and abstract to an outline and audience description. For live coding, it offers a prep checklist and ways to recover if a demo stalls or the internet drops. It also covers podcast preparation and pitching a topic to a host.

Load your audience context from `.agents/developer-audience-context.md` before using it. That file should describe your audience, relevant topics, product positioning, and preferred voice. If it is missing, run the `developer-audience-context` skill first. Without that context, advice on topics and presentation will lack a connection to your audience.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill developer-advocacy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/developer-advocacy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/developer-advocacy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill developer-advocacy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/developer-advocacy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill developer-advocacy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/developer-advocacy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jonathimer/devmarketing-skills developer-advocacy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/developer-advocacy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill developer-advocacy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --path skills/developer-advocacy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/developer-advocacy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill developer-advocacy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/developer-advocacy/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- draft a CFP submission with a talk outline
- prepare a live demo with recovery checkpoints
- pitch a technical topic to a podcast host
- build a checklist for an upcoming talk
- plan public updates about development progress

## Example prompts
- Draft a CFP submission for our project and outline the talk.
- Create a live-coding checklist with a backup plan.
- Write a podcast host a pitch for a discussion of our technical topic.

# Developer Advocacy

This skill helps you with developer advocacy activities: conference talks, live coding demos, podcast appearances, and building in public. Covers talk proposals, demo prep, social presence, and measuring impact.

---

## Before You Start

**Load your audience context first.** Read `.agents/developer-audience-context.md` to understand:

- Who you're trying to reach (conferences they attend, podcasts they listen to)
- What topics resonate (pain points, interests)
- Your product's positioning (what story to tell)
- Voice & tone (how formal/technical to be)

If the context file doesn't exist, run the `developer-audience-context` skill first.

## Conference Talks

### Finding the Right Conferences

| Conference Type | Best For | Examples |
|-----------------|----------|----------|
| **Large industry** | Brand awareness, reach | KubeCon, AWS re:Invent, React Summit |
| **Regional** | Local community, accessible | Local meetups, city tech conferences |
| **Niche** | Targeted audience, expertise | GraphQL Conf, RustConf |
| **Company-hosted** | Ecosystem presence | Vercel Ship, GitHub Universe |
| **Unconferences** | Community connection | BarCamps, DevOpsDays |

### Talk Proposal (CFP) Framework

**The winning formula:**
```
Specific Problem + Unique Angle + Clear Takeaways = Accepted Talk
```

**CFP Template:**

```markdown
# Title
[Action verb] + [specific outcome] + [with/using what]
Example: "Building Real-Time Features with Edge Functions and WebSockets"
# Abstract (100-200 words)
[Hook: Problem or curiosity gap]
[What you'll cover]
[What attendees will learn/be able to do]
# Description (detailed, for reviewers)
[Problem context]
[Why this approach]
[Talk structure]
[Your credibility to give this talk]
# Outline
- [Time] Introduction / Problem statement
- [Time] Section 1
- [Time] Section 2
- [Time] Section 3
- [Time] Live demo / walkthrough
- [Time] Key takeaways / Q&A
# Audience
[Who this is for]
[Prerequisite knowledge]
[What they'll learn]
# Bio
[Your relevant experience]
[Why you're qualified]
```

### Title Patterns That Work

| Pattern | Example |
|---------|---------|
| **How I X** | "How I Reduced Deploy Time by 80%" |
| **X in Y Minutes** | "Kubernetes Security in 15 Minutes" |
| **The X of Y** | "The Psychology of Error Messages" |
| **Beyond X** | "Beyond Console.log: Modern Debugging" |
| **X for Y** | "GraphQL for REST Developers" |
| **Lessons from X** | "Lessons from 1000 Production Outages" |

### Talk Types

| Type | Length | Best For |
|------|--------|----------|
| **Lightning** | 5-10 min | Single concept, quick demo |
