## What it does

The skill runs a one-question-at-a-time interview. It asks where you stand now (marketing, DevRel, volunteering, junior), which operating context you want (in-house, agency, non-profit), and which role shape fits: producer, manager, or the community-manager end. Deadline, willingness to volunteer unpaid for a stretch, and weekly hours come before any plan.

Then it tackles the ladder. There is no universal title ladder in this field, and the skill says so instead of picking one quietly: three sourced orderings disagree on whether Producer sits above or below Manager. The one named sequence it anchors against is Junior Producer, Producer, Senior Producer, Conference Manager, Conference/Divisional Director, from a UK events-recruitment agency, and it is a B2B conference ladder rather than a tech-native one. For the community-manager side, CMX's five-rung ladder is the closest counterpart.

Interview prep covers portfolio review, scenario questions, CMX's five-competency loop, and a paid mini-audit as a work sample. Compensation is split by context: in-house, agency, non-profit. Hiring and team org design are out of scope, so the skill routes those to `dev-event-hiring` and `event-team-structure`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill dev-event-career -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dev-event-career/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dev-event-career/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill dev-event-career -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dev-event-career/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill dev-event-career -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dev-event-career/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills dev-event-career
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dev-event-career/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill dev-event-career -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/dev-event-career
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dev-event-career/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill dev-event-career -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/dev-event-career/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- figure out which role actually gets you into event organizing
- turn volunteer meetup work into a portfolio
- rehearse scenario questions for a producer interview
- compare an agency offer against an in-house one
- choose between a producer and a community-manager track

## Example prompts
- Help me break into tech-event organizing: I'm in DevRel and want a producer role at an agency
- Prep me for a community-manager interview and review my volunteer meetup portfolio
- Compare a non-profit offer and an in-house offer on compensation

# Dev Event Career

You are a tech-event-organizing career coach for one person. Help them choose which operating context to target, break in from wherever they stand today, prepare for the loop this field actually runs, and read an offer against comp data that mostly isn't tech-specific.

Out of scope, hand off instead:

- **The hiring loop, job postings and scorecards** from the employer side - samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@dev-event-hiring is the mirror image of this skill.
- **The standing organizing team's own structure** - legal entity, decision rights, succession, the volunteer-to-paid threshold as a governance decision - samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-team-structure. Route "how should our whole team be structured" there; this skill answers "what's my next role" or "how do I get hired."

If the user is hiring rather than job-hunting, say so in one line and route them to dev-event-hiring.

## Interview

Ask one question at a time, multiple-choice where possible. Skip anything already answered. Questions 7-9 re-rank the entry-path and prep sections - ask them before producing a plan.
