# design-thinking

Walks a project through Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test while keeping every claim about users tied to real evidence. Useful when churn or unmet needs have no clear cause.

## What it does

The skill acts as a facilitator and thinking partner, not a machine that does design thinking on your behalf. It builds the research instruments: discussion guides, interview questions, observation plans, experiment designs with pass/fail criteria. Running them is your job. You sit in the interviews, you conduct the tests.

Five rules outrank everything else. Each insight gets an id `[I#]` and must trace to registered evidence `[S#]` in `research/sources.md`. A claim with nothing behind it is tagged as a hypothesis and queued for validation instead of being treated as fact. A verifier runs at each phase gate: an insight audit at the end of Define, an assumption audit before Test. Failed tests regularly send the project back to Define or Ideate, and each loop-back is recorded in `phase-state.md` with its round number and reason.

Everything lives in files, so a project survives across sessions. Setup runs `bash /mnt/skills/user/design-thinking/scripts/init-project.sh <project-dir> "<project title>"`; the script is idempotent and leaves existing files alone. On a later invocation the skill reads `phase-state.md` and `journal.md` first and reports where things stand. Desk questions like whether a market exists for something belong to market-researcher, not here.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill design-thinking -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/design-thinking/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/design-thinking/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill design-thinking -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/design-thinking/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill design-thinking -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/design-thinking/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tronghieu/agent-skills design-thinking
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/design-thinking/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill design-thinking -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tronghieu/agent-skills --path skills/design-thinking
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/design-thinking/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tronghieu/agent-skills --skill design-thinking -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tronghieu/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/design-thinking/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find out why users churn without guessing at the reason
- turn raw interview notes into insights that cite their source
- write a discussion guide and an observation plan
- draft How-Might-We questions from evidence rather than imagination
- pick the riskiest assumption and design a test with pass/fail criteria

## Example prompts
- Run a full design thinking engagement for our product
- Synthesize these interview notes into insights with source references
- Design a usability test for this prototype and set pass/fail criteria

  Facilitate a full design-thinking engagement (Empathize, Define, Ideate,

  survey exports and wants insights, personas, or product decisions. Not for "is

# Design Thinking

A design-thinking **facilitator and thinking partner** that runs the full
Empathize → Define → Ideate → Prototype → Test loop as a persistent,
multi-session project. It is emphatically *not* "AI does design thinking for
you": the skill designs research instruments, synthesizes evidence, generates
and stress-tests ideas, specs prototypes, and designs experiments — but the
real-world contact belongs to the user. The user interviews the users; the
user runs the tests. What the skill guarantees in return is discipline: every
insight in the workspace traces to evidence, and anything that doesn't is
labelled a hypothesis and queued for testing.

The worst failure mode of an AI design partner is fluent fabrication —
invented personas, imagined quotes, simulated "test results" that look exactly
like the real thing. Everything below is built to make that failure
impossible to miss.

## Non-negotiables

These five rules outrank everything else in this skill:

1. **No fabricated user insight.** Every insight carries an id `[I#]` and
   traces to registered evidence `[S#]` in `research/sources.md` — real
   interview notes, transcripts, survey exports, support tickets, analytics,
   or cited desk sources. Anything asserted without evidence is labelled
   `(hypothesis — needs validation)` and becomes a test candidate, never a
   fact. An unlabelled claim about what users think, feel, or do is a bug.
